ASH E-CIG FACT SHEET - July 2014

It is indeed interesting.

The survey appears to confirm that the gateway theory is bunkum, but we pretty much knew that already. The proportion of dual fuellers is higher than I would have expected but I suspect the proportion would be lower if more of them were forum users (for quite a few vapers, joining a forum and finding out about 'better' devices than cigalikes can be a spur to finding an effective full time device).

One thing I find particularly interesting is the lack of mention regarding proposed regulation. Although ASH's stance has changed in the past couple of years, they still generally support medical regulation (which would ensure market advantage for ASH's big pharma sponsors). I would have liked to seen a representation of levels of support for proposed regulation too. I would assume a ban on sales to under 18s would have very high support, curbs on advertising not so much support and restrictions to nic level, 'cartridge' capacity and medical licensing I would think would have low levels of support.

I know I'm a paranoid cow, but I still don't trust ASH as far as I could throw them. In the end, they will probably show strong support for medical licensing which would be a bad thing for the 1/3rd of full time vapers their survey represents.

I can't help but wonder if their recent stance is being guided more by the prospect of securing future funding from pharma companies than public health and this is the reason we see no mention in their surveys of projected support for proposed regulation.
