Battery charging oddity

I’ve just placed a married pair of Sony VTC5As into my XTAR 4 bay charger and when I switched the charger on, one LED showed red, the other green.

So I switched the bays and the same thing happened again. Then I tried both batteries individually and both get a red LED. In all instances, I’m trying to charge at 1.0A.

When I removed the batteries from the Therion, it/they were reading 77%. Both batteries and the charger are a couple of months old and purchased from Fogstar.

Any idea why this might be happening.

my right hand slot does it all the time on the xtar dragon since new. move it left to right a bit and then mine contacts.
also brought this up a while ago about a full charge remove and put back and it drops to around 85% and 30Q's only about 3 months old.

Don't laugh but when the batteries are in the charger lay the palm of your hand flat on the batteries sideways and roll the batteries in there bays, don't go crazy just a slight roll for some reason gets the contacts to sit right. My xtar 4 bay does the same thing sometimes even with brand new batteries ever since I bought it a couple of years ago, still works a treat though

My Xtar VC2 plus does a similar thing when both batteries have changed if I put the battery from Ch2 into Ch1 it will read as 89-93%, but the battery from Ch1 reads as full in Ch2, now I don't know if Ch1 is over charging or if Ch2 is under charging, what to do.

And that's with both vtc6's, 30q's and hg2's all from Fogstar including the charger.

I've tried the advice given in this thread and the problem still persists. Both batteries will charge but they won't charge together (at the same time). Beginning to think I might need two new batteries.

Have you been cleaning the contacts in the charger regularly? Sometimes the smallest piece of crap can cause problems.
When mine isn't in use it sits there collecting dust and cat hair and vape residue. Quite busy it is, on the quiet.

Do you have something to check the voltage of the batteries? This will tell you if one battery is indeed at a lower voltage than the other, or if it is your charger.

We need to rule out what it is playing up first. Does the charger work fine with other sets of batteries, or is this the only set you have available to test?

Where the therion uses the Evolv board I would expect it to give you the imbalanced warning if it was your batteries playing up. They read really well, have you had any imbalanced battery warnings/errors?

EDIT: If it is indeed your charger, at least you can charge in the mod for now. The balance charging mods that use the DNA200/250 boards are really good.
You can check the battery voltage in Escribe too which is handy.

@conanthewarrior thanks for the response.

I have four sets of Sony VTC5A batteries. Three sets charge perfectly, using identical bays in the charger. Each set are married and used in specific mods.

The Therion hasn’t, to the best of knowledge, given any warnings. My user knowledge of Escribe is basic but I’ll plug it in and see what I can find.

Usually you will get an imbalanced battery warning if one cells voltage falls lower than anothers with the Evolv boards.

However, as three sets are charging fine and only one isn't, it does sound like one cell is a bit dodgy. I would get rid of the bad cell, and use the single one for a single 18650 mod.

You can charge the batteries in the therion. A Dna chip is maybe better than an external charger at balancing both batteries so they charge equal and fully.
