0.16 kanthal. 3.2 ohm. 5 watt. 4 coils. 400 mesh. Squid ink. This started in work today, came home and set up a wick with a silica core. Same thing. This is a nightmare!
I also just started building yesterday. Could be missing something really obvious.

It sounds like you have an hotspot and possibly your mesh is not wicking fast enough.
Open up and try and observe the coil while firing, if you see any part heating up more and before the rest, you probably have found the problem.
Try and move that section of the coil slightly and fire again.
Repeat until you get a good flavour. If it doesn't work, try re-oxiding the mesh.
There are other ways, including enclosing the mesh in a fiberglass tube, insulating which hole and posts, putting a roll up paper between coil and mesh, and fire it dry. Some simply pulse the dry mesh until it fixes, but it's hard on your batteries and any shift in the coil will start the problem again.
A good build with the right materials will taste fine from the onset.
The one thing you don't want to do is vaping on a bad build, it's probably less healthy than smoking..
