Ceramic coil - Am I doing it wrong?

Hi Everyone,

With my coolfire IV 18650 I recently moved from a isub-V with SS coil to a kanger ceramic, but when I did, i've found a few things that seem odd - it could all be in my head if i'm honest, but would appreciate some advice from those more experienced!

First, i'm running a 61w whereas the SS ran at 40w - I didnt seem to be able to get any vape with less - not a problem in itself, but it rinses the 18650 battery.

Mainly though i've noticed that the smoke has no taste, unlike before, but there's a really strong aftertaste in my saliva? It also leaves a lot of residue in the pipe (I am continuing to breathe in for a sec after to make sure its clear) and I wondered if its still not hot enough or something? Like its cooling too quickly in my mouth and turning back to liquid, but i'm no expert, its purely guesswork.

It also leaves me with a slight headache after using - it passes quickly - 5 to 10 min or so - and is slight enough that it could be my imagination, but after three days of use it seems to correlate with usage, which makes me wonder.

If there is an issue, i'm sure its just me doing it wrong, but can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks!

not only that but those Kanger ceramic are not that great, they need so much wattage it's not funny .... I tried one coil then didn't bother. Go back to the regular ones, they are better.

What is the nic strength of your liquids? A high nic strength in conjunction with coils capable of producing a lot of vapour could be OD'ing you with nic. Headache is one symptom, are you also noticing a sudden rise in temperature and getting sweaty as well? Does your pulse also seem to race for a short period?

Ceramic coils definitely need more wattage to get them going well and the heat involved can completely change the flavour profile of liquids or in some cases wipe them right out. I don't use the ceramics anymore either, vape is too hot for my preference. The ceramics do indeed cause a lot of condensation in the chimney and drip tip too which ends up in your mouth if you don't clear it regularly. If you're getting liquid in your mouth that is also rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, that too could account for the headaches bud!!

The headache issue could be due to too much nicotine or more than you're used to from the greater vapour production or a reaction to the ceramic itself. As the guys have said, might be a good idea to change coils. Kanger have a massive range of SSOCC coils available, so there's no shortage of other options :).

If you specifically want SS coils. You can purchase the Kanger SS316L 0.5ohm SSOCC coils here. They're the only place I've found in the UK that sells them. I ordered a whole load from the US in bulk before Vapourized had them as I much prefer the 0.5 ohm SS coils to the standard NiChrome if I'm using stock coils as I use TC a lot and I just like the taste from SS over other materials too ;). If you have a TC capable mod with the required TC Ni (Nickel) mode, the Ni200 SSOCC 0.15 ohm coils are also a decent vape for stock coils as well, but ONLY use the Ni200 coils in TC mode if your mod supports it. Both are a much nicer vape than the ceramics. The SSOCC claptons are OK as well :). The SS can be used in TC or wattage mode, the claptons wattage only and the Ni200's in TC ONLY :).

Hope you start to get a nicer vape again and your headache problem clears up too :).

Ive used loads of different tanks that use ceramic coils. Only the freemax starre pure has been good i run mine at 40-45 watts and the flavour is intense its not a cloud chucking tank but i use it most days

One day ceramic of some kind will probably be the future but it's a long way away and much more testing needs to be done on wire and ceramic degradation.
When I tried them I found they did give a clean flavour but lacklustre vapour and needed so many watts that I went through batteries like m&m' s. The ceramic also retains a lot of heat. So I gave up in the end. I would definitely recommend going back to good old cotton.

You need a lot of power to get a decent vape from a ceramic coil, it could be it's still running too low - the headache sounds like nic overdose, and the flavour problem sounds like you need more power, but it could just be shit coils. Best bet - ditch the ceramic coils...
