I'm using a chi you with a kayfun 3.1 powered by an efest purple 18650 30A battery.

Sometimes it fires and other times it seems as if the battery dead (even after a full charge), also the button gets warm but the negative battery contact isn't hot.

Any help on this one?

If the buttons getting hot, it sounds like a short...Clean and check the contacts.

I've given them a quick wipe over, what's the best thing to clean them with (and were to get it from)?

Just remove the battery & clean the parts. Maybe strip the mod down for a clean. Hot soapy water is good. If there's anything stubborn on the contacts you could use some white spirit, brasso, autosol, nothing too abrasive is necessary.
Be sure to dry it off before reassembling. Make sure there's no battery rattle.

Thanks guys, the brasso seems to have fixed it, just taken 20 drags and it fired every time, no warm button either.

I think the coil may need a clean as it seems to struggle on a drag though

Sounds more like an airflow issue. The coil, if built well, will heat well but the rest is down to getting that wick just right in the kayfun. Are you using silica wick or cotton ?
I've read various discussions about where to position the wick. Perhaps youtube might shed some light on things.

Cotton wick, turns out my button had dropped slightly and wasn't making a connection properly
