GREETINGS apes and apettes! I have been registered and lurking for a while now but thought I'd introduce myself as have been thinking of getting more involved in the community. Wanted to share my vaping story, apologies I'm known for being somewhat verbose!
I started smoking a shisha pipe in college and enjoyed the flavours and volume of hookah smoking. Moved onto cigarettes when working night shifts in a supermarket to fund my university degree, mainly to fit in (the pre-smoking ban days with smoke filled work canteens) but also out of boredom and to deal with stress. Was smoking a good 10 years and although managed to quit for a few months at a time I never quite kicked the habit, first sign of stress and I ran out and bought a pack. Gum, patches, cold turkey, meditation, nothing quite lasted beyond a few months. I felt so awful and guilty as my mother had seen my grandparents die (before I was born) from smoking related ailments and she worried about my health all the time. My fiancee was sick of me smelling of an ashtray and constantly taking smoke breaks when we we were out and about.
Was smoking for a good 10 years and I recently completed my Junior doctor training programme. My first rotation was in vascular surgery where I was assisting in theatres with limb amputations, Ulcer debridements and the general ward care. The one thing shared by majority of my patients, and especially those with the worst problems was smoking. Confronted with gangrenous limbs and seeing firsthand the effects of COPD and heart disease really freaked me out. One day writing clinic letters I saw my consultant using a skycig (now Blu) cigalike, when she would be happily vaping in her office while the rest of us huddled away from the rain and cold to get our nicotine fix the old fashioned way. She gave me a discount code to try it and I finally realised I may have a viable way to kick the habit. I tried a variety of flavours but was never satisfied with the volume and throat hit and even with the charge case my batteries barely got me through the day and was still having the odd fag although cut down a lot.
I decided to upgrade to a spinner ego style which my off license stocked and moved to a 24mg juice. Managed for several months to vape exclusively with a but on holiday in Spain I crumbled again when all 5 of my replacement kanger evod coils were duds. On returning I decided that I would have to have a decent upgrade if this vaping lark was going to win out.
I researched YouTube and after seeing the likes of philbusardo and indoorsmokers I thought I might try out a high powered vw device and get into rebuilding. I stumbled upon leisureliquids while desperately searching for a b&m store to get some advice and had a good chat with Jon and Ant who after spending about half an hour set me up with a pioneer4you 7-30, and aerotank giant, hades 26650 and mutation x (mainly cos I was so anxious about battery safety I wanted the highest amp rating I could get!).
From that moment on I went all in and never looked back largely due to the amazing advice I've gotten especially from this forum. I've managed to get some friends and family to take the plunge although most are usually satisfied with an innokin clk and evod combo so never really had anyone I could share my passion for vaping with. I recently got my brother in law into vaping and set him up with one of my old aspire nautilus with a sig mini 30w after he ran into the same problems I had. since then he's begun rebuilding on a subtank mini and we have impromptu skype chats where I help him trouble shoot his way through temperature control. Connecting with him, offering him help and guidance and sharing his enthusiasm for vaping convinced me it was time to start getting involved with the forums and contributing to a an amazing community. Thank you all for the help you've been to me and my friends and family.
