I am using:
A DNA40 big screen in a Stealthvape enclosure.
A Torchy Samsung 25R battery.
Stealthvape NI200 Tempered wire in a Taifun GT 2.

I have worked hard with this setup to get very stable resistance.

It works extremely well except it will suddenly flip. Every toot will flash the "Temperature Protected" message entirely inappropriately. It's measuring the temperature much higher than it really is. Resulting in low vapour and flavour.

Once that happens I have to reset it by unscrewing the atty.

I've read much about the DNA40's "refinement" problems. Refinement is, IMHO, is not the problem here. It does do some refinement (and drop the "normalised" resistance by 10milliohms or so) but that's fine - that, per se, doesn't affect the vape noticeably. (In fact the problem generally occurs when there's no change in resistance at all.)

What does seem to make a difference is the battery state. After a few hours use (from fully charged) I can expect trouble.
To fix it I can either reset (refit the atty) OR, tellingly, just charge the battery up in situ, no fettling or fiddling required and no "wandering ohms" in the process.

So, you think, just change the battery. Well, I will do, but why didn't the DNA40 complain of a low battery? And that's a brand new battery from Torchy who I trust implicitly. So it shouldn't be causing a problem.

Am I ringing any bells with anyone?

mine has a similar flip out every now and again, although mostly by trying to temp protect kanthal coils when temp control is set to off. really annoying. sometimes fixed by swapping atties, other times (when i don't have another atty with me) by removing the battery.

i have given up with dry burning new coils on mine, even with the temp control turned off, whatever machine oil etc is on the new coil tends to make the resistance fluctuate slightly and the chip freaks out and temp protects it. its fine if i torch the new coil before installation though. imho there should be a further option within the temp control menu that you can select "kanthal" or something that bypasses the temp control software entirely (i suppose that is what "off" is supposed to do, but it just ignores this setting)

It's going to sound daft but are you sure it's not a wicking problem - I use the DNA40 with a Heron, if I over wick it I'll still get a vape and reasonable amounts of vapour but it seems to be much more excitable about the temperature control, same thing if I strangle the wick by kinking it when putting the cotton cap on, You can get a vape but it starts to cut out too soon and keeps giving a cold vape and flashing temp protected after the fire button is released. I found that a lot less cotton was the main key and I'm using a V1 DNA40 Small screen, one of the first batch from Vaporshark...

Thank you for that suggestion - not daft at all! But, if it were just underwicking*, I would expect the temp protection to kick in again soon after resetting or charging the battery up. But it doesn't; it'll go for hours again without a problem. Once it's flipped, that's it; it makes it's mind up I'm not going to get a decent vape again until I reset or recharge.

* I have noticed underwicking / temp protect happening when I don't expect it but normally it doesn't persist.

Tracking this problem down is like nailing jelly to the wall - nothing is ever exactly the same from one day to the next.

Tubbyengineer - 4 things conspired together to make me think the battery was the culprit when all along it was ... errr ... wicking! So very many thanks to you for your suggestion - definitely not so daft!
tinyredpostbox - mine tries to temp protect kanthal sometimes. I haven't investigated why; I just assumed it had gone mad! I do like things that are simple to operate but sometimes I wish there were a few more menus so you could say, display the battery voltage, reset/reread the atty, and switch between kanthal and nickel.
