Does Kanthal go off?

So after all the expert advice from you guys I made my first dual coil setups and got the resistance spot on. It wicks fine and there's a good amount of vapour but there's next to no flavour and just a chemically taste. The same juice at the same wattage with the same resistance coil in my triton mini gives bags of flavour so I'm trying to work out where I've gone wrong.

The coils are firing nice and evenly and the amount of vapour produced leads me to think the wicking is ok. The only thing I can think of is it's the kanthal I used which has admittedly been sat in a plastic bag for maybe 3 years from when I used to recoil pro tank heads. Could that be it?

If the Kanthal looked like clean wire then it shouldn't be that. You can hammer kanthal coils, use them, dry burn them, use them again etc so after a few goes on it even if there is slight oxidation of the metal it will be gone very quickly.

Not as good taste as your Triton - what coils have you got in that one? Is it the clapton ones? They will produce a bit more flavour.

What tank have you got your own coils in?

Just got a nautilus kanthal in the triton mini at the minute. The build is in a billow- dual coil .23 kanthal A1 - 7 full turns

Which cotton?
Sometimes fresh coil and cotton can taste a bit funky for about 1/4 tank or first 10 or so toots.

It sounds like you dry burnt the coil - which is good and correct.
It checks the coil and also burns any crud off, new wire (i.e. unused) can occasionally have oil etc. on it from manufacture.

If It isyour first build. I assume you are building on a new bit of kit or at least a new build deck.
It could be machine oil if the kit has not been cleaned thoroughly before use.

If it does go off then I am buggered as some of mine is 3 years old.

It will be your build, listen and follow the advice from the guys and gals and you will have a build to be proud of with flavour.

It's my first build on it only ever recoiled pro tank heads before that. Cotton is orgasmic muji ;-) will take a pic

Can you post some pix of the build you have in there the now.

Having had a wee look thro' what a Billow is, it would seem that wee coils you have would have to be placed just over the airhole to get anything out of it. The tank is designed as sub ohm capable, so it prefers larger coils, say 0.4mm kanth rather than the 0.23mm you have. It'll work somewhat with what you have, but with all that spare space in the chamber you'll lose a fair bit of flavour.

Next thing, did you swab out the tank when you had it and before you built it? Stripped EVERYTHING out and soaked, agitated then rinsed at least twice???

Lastly, Kanth is a stable Iron alloy, a kind of stainless Steel. If it were to 'go off' then the metallurgical world would have known about it by now!

Post some pix, let us see what you have in there and you go look at getting a Serpent Mini instead....
