Didn't ever do me any favours, I've done some really stupid shit when drunk. Certainly didn't help when I had my breakdown. Haven't touched a drop since I can't remember when, Aprilish or something.

When I "dried out" I didn't touch a drop for 18 months in fear I might get in to the habit again, now I've got it under control and just have a few beers at the weekend
