Eliquid
Ahh, the nectar that that keeps us vapers going! Eliquid is the flavoured nicotine solution that provides the taste and vapour. It can come in many different flavours from straight tobacco to more exotic fruits and deserts. If you can name a flavour, you can pretty much guarantee there will be a liquid out there that covers it (smokey bacon or wolfʼs blood anyone?). Eliquid (also known as juice or ejuice) is made of four basic components- nicotine solution, propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG) and flavourings. PG is a great flavour carrier and gives the juice that nice kick in the back of the throat, VG gives off lovely thick clouds of vapour. Obviously nicotine is the stuff that got us vaping in the first place and the flavourings help to make it interesting and stop us from getting bored and reaching for a cigarette!
Pre-bought or ready mixed juice comes in a variety of strengths with 6mg, 12mg, 18mg and 24mg being the most common levels. They also have different ratios of PG and VG depending on the maker. Some people have intolerances to either PG or VG so it is important to find what suits you best.
There are many different brands of eliquid out there and I would urge any new vaper to be brave and try different flavours as taste is a very individual thing and you might just be surprised by what you end up liking. Things to look out for are good safety information and warnings on the bottles, childproof bottles and clear labeling detailing nicotine levels and PG/VG ratios. Also check out the reviews on The Planet of the vapes to see what other people think!
There are a couple of very important safety issues that need to be dealt with. Whilst vaping is considered by many to be the safe alternative to smoking, it is still important to realise that anything we put in our lungs can and will have an effect. First and most importantly oil- this is a BIG no. If you see a juice that is advertised as oil, run as far as you can in the other direction. Oil can lead to a potentially fatal form of pneumonia (lipid pneumonia) that can be caused by inhalation of oils. Some eliquid manufacturers incorrectly call their juice oils too, which adds to the confusion, but that is a sign that the liquid may not conform to safety standards and should be avoided like the plague! The other big no is diactyl. This is a common ingredient which is safe for ingestion in food flavourings but can cause “popcorn lung” (a nasty form of bronchitus) if inhaled. It is used as a buttery, creamy note and most good ejuice makers will proudly advertise their wares as diactyl free. If they dont, or cant tell you then again step away from the juice. Any good juice maker will know exactly what goes into their eliquid and will be happy to answer any queries and questionsyou have, if they canʼt then look for a better supplier! Or you could be brave and make your own (it isnʼt that scary really!).
