WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration plans to begin regulating electronic cigarettes for the first time, banning sales to minors and requiring manufacturers to put health warnings on the nicotine-delivering devices that have become a multibillion-dollar industry, according to officials who described the agency's proposal.
But the agency will stop short of steps that many public health advocates and some members ofCongress have called for, including restrictions on television advertisements and flavorings, such as pumpkin spice or chocolate, that may target younger consumers, officials said. The agency plans to announce the new rule Thursday.

They apparently have more brains than the EU.

Sounds promising. Hopefully our "leaders" will be watching and taking notes!

Even without restrictions on advertising or flavorings, the new rule represents a "significant step in the agency's ability to regulate tobacco products," Zeller said.

This still annoys the hell out of me.. "tobacco products".

They need to pigeon hole vaping into some kind of 'danger' category to justify controlling (and thus being able to tax) it. They tried to go the medical route and got laughed out of court so they switch to tobacco classification. If vaping products are classed as tobacco, then how come nicotine patches, gum and sprays aren't also classed as tobacco?

The regulation might seem sensible in comparison to the EU TPD, but that's only because the TPD vaping regs are such a concocted, corrupt pile of crap that most things would look better in comparison.

The absurdity of hammering a square peg into a round hole, just to establish grounds for control and taxation isn't diminished in my opinion.

JUst a thought but do you think this is saying if the nic was extracted from another source (non tobacco) it would no longer fall under these regs ?????

The vast majority of nic comes from tobacco, even that used in NRT. It would be difficult to produce enough nic from alternative sources and besides, nic and tobacco are almost inseparable in the eyes of those in the tobacco control industry.. particularly when that flawed perception allows them to exercise presumed moral/ethical superiority and dictate controls.

Then breakfast cereals should come under tobacco regs, they contain Niacin, which is a form of nicotinic acid (nicotine) and the human body needs nicotinic acid, thats why it is in almost all vegetables, even die hard anti tobacco vegans would show positive for nicotine.

If they want to put warning labels on the bottles then i think most people would be happy enough with that. As long as it's nothing more than that.

Quite intriguing watching the headlines unfold in the press on the back of this ... you start to see where interests lie (and where they lie about their interests ...) e.g.

I'm rather confused as to why still many of them seem to be hanging onto that old chestnut 'won't they think about the children' though :eyeroll:
