Firing up an RDA on DNA30 for the first time

Hi there,

I bought a Tugboat V2 clone today and have all the equipment I need to go build and then use on my DNA30.

Before I do though I wanted some advice regarding safety. I take it that because I am using a regulated device, even if I accidentally build a coil with dangerously low resistance, the device simply won't fire up and that that is it's way of telling me that the resistance is too low (in effect it's a basic ohm meter?)?

Also I don't want to go too low with the resistance for first time because I might feel like I've been kicked in the head. Therefore which wire (I have sizes 0.2-0.7 and also 0.7x0.1 and 1.0x0.1) would you recommend I build with and how many turns in order to get say a 1.0ohm resistance?

The Tugboat has three posts so should I put two coils in or just leave it to one for the moment?

Thanks for your help.

Forgive me here but it does sound like you need to put some downtime into what's what. Get over to youtube & watch some tutorials, use a resistance calculator, whatever it takes. If you're about to put an rda on a vs & don't know how many wraps to wrap, you need to look at it.
Don't get me wrong mate, i'm not dissing your op & you'll get help here.

There's plenty of info out there if you look around. Do you have a resistance checker ? Mind you, the vs should give you a pretty good reading. I'd advise kanthal between 0.28mm & o.32mm (0.32 is my fave) Don't feel the need to necessarily go sub ohm.

All excellent advice. It can be a bit daunting getting your head round things, I struggled for a bit I can tell you! I would recommend getting another ohms meter, it's well worth having a second way of checking just in case. I'd start with watching all this vids about and then some more , then when you feel ready build a single coil with at least a 1 ohm resistance to get yourself used to things and you'll go from there.

Google "Steam Engine coil" for a link to some very useful calculators to help with figuring out number of wraps, amps drawn etc.

I wouldn't want to discourage anyone & it isn't really that critical or complicated, we're vapers, not rocket scientists but there are a few sensible practicalities to understand as a minimal intro. In fairness when i started wrapping coils i used a mech & a dripper. I was in the same situation but without the safety net of a regulated device & i had to go with sony vtc4 batteries & coils above 1ohm first & then i experimented under 1ohm but not before chatting with some other people first & hitting youtube, something i continue to do. I was just a keen as anyone to get stuck in & it actually could have gone bad if i'd not just done that little bit of homework. I walked before i could run & i still come up against attys that present a challenge. It's good to still have something new to learn.

vaporsizer, I've been doing some reading and watched those videos you sent links for. Thanks.

Most information that I've read so far surrounding RDAs and coils involves mechs and not regulated devices. I've searched on the forums for an answer to whether the DNA30 will still work, and whether it is safe, if I accidentally put a coil on it with sub 0.5ohm resistance, but cannot find any information........as of yet.

If I still require an ohm meter then I'll get one but if the DNA30 has one built in, or at least the ability to safely tell me that the resistance is too low, then I don't want to spend money unnecessarily. However if it isn't safe even with a regulated device then I'll go ahead and buy one.

You'll be safe with the DNA30 - it will limit anything that isn't safe (the worst that will happen is you'll blow the board, although this isn't likely). That being said, learn your stuff before you give it a go. I know it's tempting to just wrap a coil and give it a blast, but you really need to understand what you're doing or you'll just have a bad experience all round.

Anyone about to build their first coils should ask themselves this question:

"If this were any other piece of electrical equipment in my house, would I be happy repairing it, then sticking it to my face and turning it on with the level of knowledge I currently have?"

If the answer is no, you need to learn more.

Your dna wont let you fire a shorted coil, it will come up at "shorted" or "check atomizer" so its not as dangerous as a mech. As far as goin below your dna's ohms rating i wouldnt worry too much because it wont let you, or at worst fry the board as someone else said. Started off building on a regulated device is recomended but a bit of research is deffinatly good practise. Enjoy it though mate i find it theraputic building coils

Enjoying it right now. Built the first coil. I used a calculator to get 1.4 ohms to be on the safe side however my dna30 is reading it as 2.0 ohms. Still, it's vaping nicely.
