Hello all. I've just switched from disposable pretend cigarettes to a vaping kit, and I have a few rather stupid questions. I have an ego battery with a CE4 reservoir thingy.

1. How do I tell when my battery life is getting low? I have the impression it's supposed to flash or something, but I've not worked it out yet.
2. How often will I need to replace the CE4, and how will I know when I need to?
3. I'm going to start experimenting with different flavours (when I pluck up the courage). Will I need a fresh CE4 for each flavour? Because that could get expensive fast. If not, doesn't the new flavour taste of the old flavour? Is there some way to clean out any residue?
4. I'm slightly alarmed by the warnings plastered all over everything saying that if I get the liquid on my skin I will instantly drop dead and then burn in a fiery lake of poison for ten thousand years. Do I need to be incredibly super careful, or can I just have a quick wash if I spill the stuff?
5. I'm currently using a tobacco-flavoured liquid that I'm really not terribly keen on, and I wondered if someone could perhaps suggest one I might like better. My favourite type of fake cigarette was called a FC300 / FC500 and was supposedly in tobacco flavour, though to me it just tasted vaguely sweet. If anyone knows of a liquid with a similar flavour that would be amazing. Otherwise, flavours I *won't* like are mint/menthol, coffee, strong "cigar"-y tobacco, banana, liquorice/aniseed or anything intensely sweet. I know, I know, I'm awkward.

Thanks in advance for any advice, people!

1)It will flash, so don't worry :)
2) You'll know when both flavour and vapour production are effected
3)Rinse under tap, leave to dry naturally, then do 3 5 second 'dry burns' to dry it off and add the liquid (How I do it anyway) then let it soak in for 5 minutes :)
4) I've got 72mg Nicotine on my skin before, and in cuts. The cut burned like a bitch, but you'll be fine as long as you wash it off and don't chain vape straight away (It can be absorbed through your skin)
5) RY4 is your answer ;)

Just remember that although you will need to replace your ce4 fairly regularly, it's still going to be a lot cheaper than buying ciggies!
oh and another great but of advice I can give you is just relax and enjoy! Don't be afraid to try flavours that you don't think you'd like-you may well be surprised! If someone told me I'd love custard flavour when I'd started out vaping I'd have laughed them out of the house!

Thanks very much for the advice, Raguri and Purplefowler! I think I'll order some samples from Smoke Rainbow, including some RY4s. (Hark at me, using the lingo!)

Great idea! Ry4 can be lovely but there is no standard flavour. I love the more sweeter, caramel ones but I've had others that taste almost beefy (but that could have just been me!). Let us know which ones you like and which ones you're not so keen on :)

Only ever had 1 ry4 I didn't like, and that was only as I didn't know it was 100%pg.
Was coughing like a dog

1. How do I tell when my battery life is getting low? I have the impression it's supposed to flash or something, but I've not worked it out yet.

One disadvantage of eGos is that, yes, it will flash - but only on its dying breath, so you only know it's running out of power when it already has. That's why we all have at least one spare!

2. How often will I need to replace the CE4, and how will I know when I need to?

I've never actually had one "pop", but their performance does deteriorate as the coils get gunked up - as the advice above, a rinse and leave them to dry or dry burn (press the power button with no juice in the tank to evaporate the water)
To be honest, I didn't stay on CE4s long enough to have one die on me - I moved onto Evods, Protanks, Protank Minis, DCTs and Protank 2 (Evods are a great move on tank) - all those (except DCTs) are Kanger tanks and take the same replacement heads (which is much cheaper than replacing CE4s)

3. I'm going to start experimenting with different flavours (when I pluck up the courage). Will I need a fresh CE4 for each flavour? Because that could get expensive fast. If not, doesn't the new flavour taste of the old flavour? Is there some way to clean out any residue?

If flavours are similar, you can pop a new one onto the tank without rinsing - you'll get a crossover of flavours until the 2nd one kicks in. If you have flavours that differ greatly, then a rinse would be advised (I emptied a tank of orange flavour recently and replaced it with amaretto, and I could still only taste orange.

As above, wash it off - if you get a headache or feel queasy when vaping, you've probably overdone the nicotine a little and give it a break (nicotine patches are basically the same as having nicotine solution on your skin)

5. I'm currently using a tobacco-flavoured liquid that I'm really not terribly keen on, and I wondered if someone could perhaps suggest one I might like better. As above again - I'm not bothered about bananas or banana flavoured foods, but love it in a vape. I love cherry, raspberry and apple sweets, but they don't excite me in e-juice. What I have found is that the fruit/dessert/drink flavours make the flavour of a real cig pretty disappointing.

To answer your question Citrus,

1. Does your battery have a light on the button? If it does, it's a good old traffic light system. Easy peasy. Green good...red bad, go charge up. The amber (in my experience) means it's about 3 puffs away from being red...pretty useless colour on them tbh!

2 + 3. You know...trust me, you know! In my experience it tastes like a mouthful of burnt cat piss... Tbh, I found for a bit under £30 you can get about 4 CE4s and 4 diferent flavours to try. Considering that's 40ml of liquid it will last a fair old while and then you dont have to clean out any old tanks...nothing annoys me more than cleaning out CE4s. That's why I dont use them much now. Plus you get to try some different flavours! If you find a good cherry flavour let us know :D

4. I've had loads of juice on my fingers, my lips, in my mouth, eyes, balls etc (Ok, last two were a bit of a lie) and it's not bad, nothing happened. The labels are because concentrated nicotine is rather poisonous...but when you buy juice you are buying it pretty well diluted. I'm not saying it's good to go take a bath in the stuff...but i wouldnt worry about a tank leaking all over you. We're talking about single figure ml of dilute nicotine base. It's not harmful really. They just like to put harm labels on everything even remotely likely to cause a tiny rash...it gives people jobs to do this, so why not!

5. Cant help here much, I like the coconut ice from alchemist cupboard, and anything made with capella's harvest berry flavourings...but I don't tend to go for tobacco flavours. They all taste like old shoes to me. But then I've only tried a couple so maybe I'm being a bit harsh!

You've done well to switch. The difference between an ego + tank and a cigalike is similar to the difference between a macdonalds burger and a sirloin steak in a fancy restaurant. Same same...but very different! I haven't smoked since moving to my ego type battery...of course I also haven't stopped spending money and buying different mods, tanks, wick, wire, juice, flavours, base liquids.....the list goes on, you get the idea!

Good luck! Hope this helps a bit.

+1 (I agree) on everything that Raguri, Puplefowler, Fleabag said...
Bear in mind that the LD50 (The dose that kills 50%) currently stands at almost 700mg, thats about 5 bottles worth of juice, you'd have to be chugging the stuff like a demented wino to do yourself any real harm...
CE4's are Ok But I'd suggest that once you have a little spare cash you should invest in an evod or protank, great bits of kit for the price and easy to use fill and clean...:grin2:

oohh - one thing I didn't respond to in my earlier post and should...

You're not an idiot - the only stupid question is the one you didn't know the answer to and didn't ask.

I'd not describe myself as an expert by any stretch, been vaping on tanks 7 months (I don't count the failed cigalikes last year) - I now chat with a certain amount of confidence about ohms, watts and volts, silica & kanthal and have a fair amount of experience with the low/middle price range of tanks. It's a sharp learning curve, and though I don't ever expect to be building my own mods, I do feel comfortable in the vaping community.

I feel that my role as mentor to the newbies is the best way I can put back a little of what I got from the marvellous chaps on here, as I can speak from recent experience.

My primary advice to anyone new is to move from CE4 to evod faster than I did. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have done most things the same, but I'd have started on a couple of Evods from the start. Better vape, more reliable and cheaper in the long run (oh, and they look good, too).

Not to say there aren't other equally good (or better) tanks out there (and even prettier in some cases), but they are more expensive and they just improve on something that's pretty damn good already. There's always time to expand the collection when you're more sure of what you want.
