Knowing when to change/charge a battery

What's is the best/safest way to determine when to charge a battery in mech mod or even variable mod?

In a variable one I'd just change/charge whenever it was cutting out (or slightly before this if I knew I was about to go out).

With mechs the general rule is to change when the vape drops off to a level that doesn't satisfy you. For a lot of people this ends up being at around 3.6V, because that's where the drop off really starts to accelerate.
