A classic mod and, considering the price point, one of my favourites. Lets begin!
Packaging.
I ordered my lavatube (body only) from Charlie’s Vape Shop (Will post a link at the bottom) for £24.99. I received mine in a plain white box but I do believe some vendors keep a full kit that comes in a black padded box.
In the box.
As the lavatube isn’t a telescoping mod, in comes in only two parts the body (tube and control head) and a bottom screw cap.
The Review.
The first thing about the Lavatube I noticed was the weight. In product photos, the Lavatube looks quite burly and big, I was personally expecting something in the weight class of say the Vamo. On its own (without a battery inside) it is very light, lighter than a 650 mah ego battery. Don’t be fooled by this however, despite being very light, the build quality of this device is very high, it feels very well made and strong.
The Lavatube only takes 18650 batteries and is actually designed to fit a flat top 18650 rather than the more common nipple top 18650, this doesn’t mean however that it doesn’t fit the nipple top it just means that the screw cap doesn’t go all the way down and you are left with a thin gap but it still works fine. I tried stacking 2x 18350s in this mod, but the screw cap simple couldn’t go on due to the added size. I should remark at this point that the threads on the screw cap are not brilliant, not terrible, but not brilliant either, I found myself having to twist it back and forth a couple of times to get it on flush. The screw cap has a spring on the inside and a small vent hole in the center. Once you insert a battery and screw the tube shut, the screen will light up red (The red lit screen on the matte black body is a very nice look for the record).
The Lavatube doesn’t maintain settings from the last time it was on, so every time you turn it on it will default to it’s lowest voltage of 3.0 volts, which can be a bit of a pain in the arse but isn’t a massive issue. I should say although I quite like the red lit screen, if you look down at the screen from above you can actually see some of the circuitry, which isn’t a very good look (but again not a big issue). This device runs from 3.0 volts all the way up to 6.0 volts, however it has no variable wattage function (so shit one for any of you variable wattage lovers out there). You can control the voltage via neatly placed minus and plus buttons just below the screen. The voltage on this device will round robin back to 3.0 if you press up while on 6.0 volts.
To turn the device on and off there is a little red power button just below the plus and minus buttons which you simply hold for about 5 seconds to turn the device on or off. To fire up the device and use it, there is a large (gloriously clicky) button on the side of the device, which you simply click and hold to vape. The fire button is well situation if, like myself, you like to use your thumb to fire up your device.
The Lavatube can read the ohms of your attached atomizer, which is a nice feature for such a low priced mod. To check the ohms of your attached atomizer simply click the fire button 5 times and it will read the ohms on the cool red screen. The main issue people might have with this device, is that it only fits 510 devices by default, however this can easily fixed by purchasing a 510/ego adaptor (which you can pick up for a couple of quid, I bought mine with the device from charlies vape shop). With an adaptor you can run ego connection devices just fine, however it doesn’t cause them to sit a bit higher up, which makes them look a bit silly and if you are like me and are bothered by stupid crap like that, then it might annoy you.
All 510 devices I have tried on it worked perfectly such as the Iclear 30, the Protank and some boge 510 cartos. With the adaptor attached it has worked with all of my tanks, carts etc, including the ce4, the ce6, the evod, the ts3 and the iclear 16.
In terms of performance, the Lavatube performs shockingly well, like equally as well as my Vamo. There is no rattle from the battery compartment thanks to that big spring in the screw cap.
The fire button is very clicky and responsive and the screw is perfectly readable in direct sunlight. The finish on the Lavatube is very nice, its matte black with a very slight grain and because its matte finish, it (unlike my Vamo or my SVD) more or less doesn’t show fingerprints at all. As I said earlier it is very light but despite this it feels very well built and sturdy.
I should also point out, it has a very very shallow well around the 510 connection so anything recessed, like evods, ce4s etc are not gonna to fit on this device without an adaptor.
Things I like
Love the Red backlit display, it looks epic with the black body
I like how it feels in my hand, its very nice to hold and the button placement is good.
I love the super clicky fire button.
I like that it can read ohms.
I love the fact that this mod is about 25 quid, I mean that is just shocking considering how well this thing can hold its own with some of the more expensive mods.
Things I do not like
I dislike that the device needs an adaptor to use ego connection devices.
I dislike that the battery tube isn’t really big enough (it works but with a standard 18650 it wont screw shut completely)
I dislike the poor threads on the screw cap.
Final thoughts
Honestly, I was rather impressed by this mod, because at the end of the day it cost 25 quid… I mean that is hardly more than some Ego Batteries. This device is a brilliant mod for the price, just brilliant. If this device was say £50 then maybe I might think it is a bit crap but if you have your heart set on a big battery mod but can’t afford to splash on, say a provari or even something like the Vamo, then this mod is perfect for you. If you are considering upgrading from a little ego setup, then this Lavatube will serve you well!
