A few weeks ago, whilst preparing for the Fundraiser, I had occasion to revisit the threads about previous events we have run on here, it was quite interesting to go through them all and refresh my aged memory. The biggest thing I noticed was just how many Fine Apes have departed now and that in turn made me look rather more closely at what had changed so much.

Things certainly have changed since the days when the idea of raising some money for various Charities was first mooted by @joe clay @vapemac and myself. LOL

What brought me thoughts together in a more coherent way was listening to the Blog Post that Dean (The Vaping Biker) put up and then reading the views expressed both here and elsewhere on the web.

Several of us have spoken about how the whole vaping scene has changed over the last 18 months or so and where POTV sits within today’s world of vaping. The general consensus was that whilst the market is still as buoyant as ever, the excitement factor has diminished as trends changed, by which I mean, perhaps vaping is now regarded as rather more “The Norm” than say 3 years ago? I do think that a great many of the longer term vapers have found their comfort zones and tend to remain with the gear that satisfies them. I know that here at home, we seem to have reached a plateau by dint of finding the items that work perfectly for our needs. Yes, it has taken time, but for our part.. and I do completely understand that every vaper has their own requirements and thankfully, we are all different in our choices, which has remained one of the really good parts of forum life. This plateau …… for want of a better word, causes me no concerns at all, in some respects, it is almost a relief to feel as settled with things as they are now.

Obviously, the newcomers, hopefully get the same enjoyment that we all experienced when we first started out? I hope that’s the case anyway?

I would prefer not to get into the whole debate about whether the market has now become saturated? Perhaps it has, but possibly not. There are still areas where our “hobby” could use improving and I expect there always will be, my main beef would have to be Battery technology, but that appears to be gaining pace nowadays? Certainly with the flurry that was created when people suddenly rediscovered 18350 Tube Mods has had an impact, I well remember how appalling the battery life used to be when we were both using 18350 Mods permanently LOL. Now we see a single 18350 Cell which has seemingly prodigious life between charges compared to the old offerings. The LiPo market seems to have listened too, with rather more advanced performance than was once the case.

POTV still remains the most active forum out there, the content and discussions have changed dramatically compared to the forum that I first stumbled across in 2013 LOL, it’s all too easy to look back and regret some of the changes, but…. One Man’s Meat, another Man’s Poison” as they say. I do wonder where we will all be and what we will be discussing in another 10 years time? HOPEFULLY NOT BREXIT!!!! LOL

Here’s to the future, whatever it may hold.

I certainly do but I guess that’s because I’m one of those serial obsessional hobbyists who enjoys “getting into” what ever currently takes my fancy.
As Dean said in his blog when you guys started there was a lot of awful stuff out there and some stuff that just didn’t work very well. Now there are so many devices and atties that seem to work with little to no user effort required and many are all producing the same or similar qualities of vape. From that perspective I’d imagine that there is a certain degree of loss of everyone clubbing together to try and improve what you are being given. There isn’t the requirement now to “modify” and improve I’m guessing and this, in turn, reduces the need for communities to come together to share skills and ideas as much?

Maybe the changes to FB will bring people back to forums but I hope not just as a place to sell and trade.

It's like SO many things though isn't it? Everything evolves and very rapidly within the Vaping Industry.
I don't want to get too into it, but take clones for example? Years ago, in the main, they weren't that great, but look at them now!!! In many cases, clones are more than comparable with the original articles, I am talking RDAs, RTAs etc here. Exactly what so many hoped for came to fruition, the Cloners started developing their own ideas and now we really do have some exceptional quality gear available for very little outlay. As you said @Discomatt :) Nowadays you can be certain of far better results from initial purchases than we could have dreamed possible back nearer the beginning.

I know it's a very different subject matter, but similar things happened in the Guitar and Bass world, the original "copies" from around 1970 onwards were pretty appalling things, but, within a decade we had "Replicas" of instruments that were commanding high prices, Gibson, Fender, Rickenbacker etc, that were at far more affordable prices and with a few tweaks to circuitry could perform in a very pleasing way. Nowadays, "Some" of the early replicas, particularly the Tokai brand have become highly sought after because despite being regarded as a Copy, they could be made to perform just as well as The Real Deal.

Tweaking, or modding our RTAs and RDAs was a tremendous learning curve and served us well in learning more through some sometimes fairly BRUTAL home surgery LOL

Yes, it's a great time to be a vaper, despite successive attempts to demonise the whole industry.

Staying with clones for the moment....due to the quality of them improving ….I think this has contributed to market saturation....they are cheap available in 10s of thousands ….if they end up in the drawer...its no big outlay....and then onto the next one...so folks amass some amount of shit.
Take golf as an example......next to nobody buys copies....may keep n use clubs for years, quality and innovation thrives......and less shit is amassed

I'm just happy that POTV remains a forum and hasn't migrated to some social network cesspit.

Thinking about the longer term vapers that are active on the forum they are indeed a sage in the vape environment. And what great people you all are . What I've gained ,gathered and absorbed has been fundamental to my enjoyment and regular involvement on POTV . Not going to bang on about how it made me give up smoking ,it helped yes, but it's about making you and others feel that you're doing something that helps yourself or others on their way to better things. Great things have happened on this forum. Most of us are not aware what happens here. But what happens makes a difference.

My dremal hasn't been let loose on a tank in years.
I know Rob had to do surgery on a Sat22 not so long ago...

Indeed I did and what a difference it made :) That one was a success! :)

I'm optimistic about the future of vaping and I am seeing development where others seem to see stagnation.
There's massive over-capacity in the vaping industry, it's gradually maturing and has produced a strong mainstream with many niches. There's a lot of FOMO with anything that gains traction which is why a flood immediately follows and often swamps the first to market. Genuine, game-changing innovation is rare but not non-existant.

I found the rise of the pods in 2019 very interesting indeed, not just because they've replaced the cigalike for new starters but because they've tapped into a desperate need for portability and simplicity amongst established vapers who had been force fed a bloated form factor and gold-plated feature set in their mods.

KISS is the winning formula, always has been, always will be.

EDIT - I also think that it's very easy to become complacent with gear that we currently enjoy using, because it works well enough. Taking a step back, looking again with fresh eyes is a difficult process but if you can do it you will undoubtedly see the flaws and faff that you're labelling as quaint idiosyncracies. Do you really believe that your gear is flawless and perfect?

@scrumpox. No of course not. But it does what I require and with the minimum of fuss and palaver.
For the most part I tend to be revisiting old favourites, C Frames and such and being the luddite I am, thoroughly enjoying it.:2thumbsup:
