I was just wondering if there was a consensus regards how effective mixing using a magnetic stir plate is over steeping, and how long I should stir for?

Also:
I was quite interested in building a magnetic stir plate, and was wondering if its worthwhile adding a heating element like a peltier to help with VG heavy mixes, and if so what temperature range should I be aiming for?

A magnetic stirrer would be interesting but fairly ineffective, you'd have to leave it stirring for hours at a time, Ultrasonic steeping is probably faster and easier unless you are heading for multi litre batches...

Are we talking about the cheap "Ultrasonic " Jewellery cleaners, or something with a real ultrasonic transducer (as the latter are a little cost prohibitive for my DIY need).

Just the cheap ones from Aldi or Maplin etc, seem to work quite well from all accounts. Good for cleaning atties too...

I'll vouch for using the cheap Ultrasonics for steeping, fair hurried my custards along. saved at least a month.
The Mag plate would be useful for mixing bigger batches initially before bottling.

For me, shaking the bottle vigourously every other day is all I need for maturing a juice. Can't always be done with the racket the US makes. Pisses off the cat too.

Hint of the day: When using your Ultrasonic cleaner give the cat a small tasty treat. The little bugger will soon learn that Ultrasonic = Treat and be far less grumpy...

What is this 'less grumpy' you speak of? I call witchcraft!

This usually means that the cat is satisfied with clawing out just one of your eyes before retiring to the garden to murder small creatures...
