Last week I was all set to splash out on the Maplins rotary tool, as soon as the necessary dosh appeared in the bank account, only to find, once the funds were there, that the offer had expired. Quel dommage! Gutted wasn't the word.

I'm glad I didn't suck it up and pay the extra, cos this little tyke appeared in my local Lidl today. Along with 99pc attachments package for a laughable £4.99. I know it isn't a Proper Dremel, but neither was the Maplins one, and I've had no problems with other "Parkside" tools I've had previously...

The green one from Maplins is shit and falls apart after a couple of weeks.

Well I had a lucky escape.

BTW, the laughable £4.99 was for the attachments box, not the rotary tool, which is £16.99. Total £21.98, less than I was about to spend on Maplins' PoS. Result!

... Think I may have to go to Lidl, want to get into metal engraving since I did it in design tech for an art deco radio.. (engraving brass and copper is a bitch when you mess up and have to start all over again... Making you re-mill out everything)... :'(

Shit more accessories I've convinced myself I need, never mind just think of the money i'll save sanding my contacts down with Wet and Dry in the Future!!!!:whiteflag:

In a similar vein, for any prospective modders out there, this thursday Aldi have a rather good-for-the-money soldering station

As I said, for-the-money, and for occasional stuff its fine, I use all sorts of units at work, mostly 40 or 48W, but 30w will cut it for the simple things modders need, such as wires to brass 510's etc

I already have 2 soldering irons,a 100w gun for melting through the kitchen worktops & an iron(forgotten its rating)that can ruin the carpet quite easily(I know I need a bench but no spare room in this womble-hole sized council house)

As I said 'I wouldn't' my reasoning through my experiences maybe should have been added ;)

A soldering iron with low wattage (30W) can lose heat faster than it can re-heat itself - this results in bad solder joints, or cold solders, which can create weak joins.

This particular model would be great for someone who is doing the odd 'fix it' or learning how to solder, and I am not trying to put anyone off buying it, just giving my opinion about the product :)
