Silly Idea: Raspberry Pi Vape

this idea popped into my head a few days ago while posting on another thread about the evic, ive had it in mind to think about making a DIY vape for a bit now, just to say i have done it, then the idea of using the pi popped into my head.

i got the evic because im a total nerd who loves having random features on things (even if i dont use them!) so i thought why not see if i can take it a step further. im not sure how well it will cope with the power drain yet, i havent even looked into it, but its not actually intended to be a real use thing just a "can i do it?" kind of thing. it may not work at all but itll be fun to see if it does. im probably not going to be rushing with getting it made but ill post some pics and info if it is eventually a success.

at the end of the day ive little to lose by trying, the parts i need will cost next to nothing and worst case scenario i kill the pi (unlikely though) which isnt exactly going to break the bank at £25. any suggestions or ideas are welcome (you can also tell me im a total fool if you like!)

Raspberry Pi is versatile, not sure what the aim is here, but I'm thinking of a computerised mod using raspberry pi. Very useful, you could program it to open the garage door while vaping. :)

I know I'm a year late but I just thought the same thing about 10 mins ago, googled it and it just happened to be the 1st result pointing to only my favourite (home) forum! I was thinking touch screen, with a couple of games onboard, note taking app, a couple of other useful everyday pieces of software. I am sure it will only be a matter of time until some mods have a couple of games and/ or apps installed anyway!
Did you get anywhere with this?

The OP hasn't been back since April 2013 so doubt you will ever know.

If you Google "Arduino ecig mods" you will probably find Mamu/Breaktru sites, along with a few others where they have created some extremely interesting devices.I once followed a thread through 70+ pages where he was building a home-mains powered mod and on completion he sent it out for testing, where an issue was discovered that killed components and I gave up following it thereafter as that was time I could never recover. :P

I'm waiting for my Pi to be delivered, hopefully today, but most likely tomorrow :(

Anyway, from what I've read, you could theoretically have the Pi control the vape, but it couldn't power it. You'd have to have a second power source to power the 510 separately, the Pi only has 2A input, and I think you can only use 500mA through the GPIO. So you'd also need some kind of protection for the Pi from the high power you're putting into your circuit to fire it.

I hope that makes sense, I'm not certain it does lol. Also, if I'm wrong, I'm happy to be corrected :)

i know the idea has been tried (i followed the same thread) but the problem is the chinese/dna chips are dedicated and compact and etc etc already
but, the tinkerer in me says
pi/arduino, use the gpio to talk to a programmable resistor on the I2C bus
the programmable resistor then replaces the one on the OKR/Raptor etc etc..the one we use to adjust our normal box mods once we have made them using vaping stuff.

so, you end up with a thing made for vaping, and the power output, vape time and so on is on the pi/arduino, and then you can have your touchscreen and serial bluetooth for control for not much extra $$

AD5246 datasheet and product info | 128 Position I2C Compatible Programmable Resistor in SC70 Package | Digital Potentiometers | Analog Devices
(just an example of a programmable resistor)
thats how i would do it, should the world end tomorrow. In the meantime, 100w boxmods are actually £60.:-)

I've got a spare pi kicking about so may actually look into this. I'm not a hardware hacker by any means but this could be a cool 'just because' project to get a ce4 or similar working.

A touchscreen with a few apps such as coil builders, resistance calculators, recipe database and of course potv would be cool

Coming soon to mod makers section... ;-)

I gave up and bought one of these :D
