First impressions
The device arrives well shrink wrapped into a nice carrying case. Other manufacturers please take note!
Once you get through the shrink wrap and into the carrying case, the device is again carefully packed, complete with a USB charging cable, instructions and a flat head blue screwdriver for adjusting the 510 connector.
The instructions are fairly clearly written and concise.
A closer look
As soon as you pick the SMY35 watt up, its budget nature starts to show as it feels a little bit “tinny” in the hand, and on my example there was a little bit of a rattle from the battery when you moved the device from side to side. That said, however, the fit and finish of the case is quite acceptable.
The buttons were also a little bit rattly but they had a lovely “clicky” action to them and they are a pleasure to use.
The 510 connector adjusts easily using the supplied screwdriver, and it appears to be fitted nice and straight.
There will be a small gap for airflow from the 510 connector when you have attached an atomizer and there is no way to make a flush connection due to the design of the 510.
The USB connector is on the bottom of the device and there is sufficient venting available for the battery.
Using the device
To turn the mod on, click the fire button 5 times, to turn it off again click the fire button 5 times.
The display is a very bright OLED screen, it displays the set wattage, the resistance of the attached atomizer and a battery icon to display the remaining battery life.
There is also a voltage display that only displays the voltage applied to the atomizer when the fire button is pressed.
When pressing the + or – power buttons the level changes fairly rapidly and does not round robin so if you go all the way up to 35 watts, you will need to go all the way back down!
The device can also be locked or unlocked by pressing the + and – power buttons at the same time for 2 seconds.
Important points to note are that the screen does not go to sleep and always stays at the same brightness and the device does not offer pass through on USB (i.e. you will not be able to use it whilst charging).
I really like how this device feels in the hand, as it is a bit taller than other comparable devices at this price point it sits nicely in the palm and the fire button can be finger or thumb fired depending on your preference. The SMY also feels accurate to its set power level so I suspect it has been designed to use RMS measurement rather than mean.
Overall conclusion
This is a budget device which has a few minor annoyances (battery and button rattle and the non-flush 510), but considering the price point it represents good value for money and I would not hesitate to recommend it for use as a cheap mod that you are not worried about scratching and marking.
