As some of you might know, we are also working on producing more content so new users can easily find information and the resources they need to get into vaping. This week our article topic is E-Liquids and everything you need to know about them.
E-Liquids - Everything You Need to Know
Aside from the physical E-Cigarette or Hookah Pen, the main contributing factor to your vaporizing experience is your E-Liquid. E-Liquids are typically made with 4 components, PG (Propylene Glycol), VG (Vegetable Glycerin), flavoring and nicotine (optional). Each component has a specific functionality and here is what they do.
Vegetable Glycerin
VG is a sweet tasting viscous liquid that is responsible for the vapor that you see. Higher proportions of VG result in larger vapor clouds. If you're a smoke trick fanatic, look for E-Liquid with higher VG content.
Propylene Glycol
PG is a much thinner flavorless liquid that contributes a more "throat hit" sensation to your vapor. This helps to simulate the sensation of smoking when in reality you're inhaling and exhaling essentially water vapor. A cautionary note, though rare, PG has been known to cause allergic reactions in some users, if you experience any problems like tingling in your throat or any other irritations STOP USING IMMEDIATELY and consult your physician.
Flavoring
This is the base of what your E-Liquid will taste like. It can be either natural or artificial but is ALWAYS food grade thus safe for human consumption. Flavoring is typically 10% - 20% of your overall E-Liquid mixture.
The best thing about flavoring is you can change it to whatever suits your particular mood at the moment. Maybe you prefer morning menthol and an afternoon pineapple? Or you've been smoking cigarettes for 20 years and love the tobacco flavor; yeah they make an E-Liquid for that. You can even mix and match flavors to create a custom blend for yourself.
Nicotine
This is an optional component, and most varieties of E-Liquids come in both nicotine and nicotine free varieties. Nicotine content is based on the percentage of pure nicotine contained in your E-Liquid. A general guide to nicotine strength and concentration is as follows:
Low 6mg - 10mg
Medium 11mg - 15mg
High 16mg+
Most commonly E-Liquids are somewhere in the 50% VG and 50% PG +/- 25% in either direction, with flavoring and nicotine making up the rest. More advanced vaporizer users will purchase custom tailored blends to suit their particular style. For example, a heavy cigarette smoker would likely choose a high nicotine content tobacco flavored blend, or if you like blowing O's and doing smoke tricks all day you might want a higher VG content so your vapor is thicker.
Vapor aficionados take E-Liquids to another level and actually mix their own flavors. You can buy all the components separately and mix them to your desired proportions for a truly customizable vapor experience. A cautionary note for you DIY folk out there, nicotine is a very poisonous substance so if you're going to be mixing nicotine in your E-Liquid triple check and make sure the ratios are correct and that you take all proper safety precautions.
If you just got scared off of mixing your E-Liquids from scratch you can take the easy way out and just buy a few different pre-made flavors and mix them up yourself. In the end, it's all about personal preference, so give a few mixtures a shot and see what you like best.
