Hello pipette jockeys,

I've just ordered some basics to get some mixing going. I have a long science background, so mixing stuff is right up my street. I really wish I would have taken some Gilson pipettes and things with me when I quit and got into teaching (I contemplated it, but couldn't see a use for lab stuff at the farm, I.e. accurately measuring sub-ml amounts). Damn pipettes are like 100 quid each.. we had boxes of semigood ones (98% accurate) going to the tip :p Maybe I'll need to get in touch with old contacts and organise a pub drop off of supplies.

Nevermind, I can easily mix with syringes, although its not as fast, accurate or cool. I was just looking at all the tobacco steeping methods that people do.. In the lab there would have been solutions to all the problems of filtering the stuff. Being a biochemist (and indeed a specialist in viscous liquids) I know I could have ridden a liter of liquid of ALL particular matter bigger than a single soluble protein (this would be a sterile solution that freely filters through a .22 um filter) in less than a day (granted the equipment would have been expensive). I have a good friend who is still in Cambridge who specialises in extraction of a wide variety of organic compounds. I think I'll talk to him about the steeps that people do (even to my limited knowledge they seem slightly simplistic).

Anyway, I'll mix the stuff when it comes. I've gone for the Decadent Vapours flavours like DY4 (I like RY4). Hopefully it'll be palatable at least.

Will be interested to see what you come up with. Keep us posted

I was thinking of getting into a bit of extraction Have not looked into it too far yet so don't know if I need lots of expensive kit

Good luck with your mixes doesn't sound like you will need it.

Its all experimentation at the end of the day

Dr A nice to see you getting into making your own, i am sat here smiling and thinking wow, its breaking bad!
Maybe you have tips and advice for us being that this is up your street :)

I'll be slowly doing things but so far the first things that can be fixed cheap would be:

1. Grinding the leaves: as suggested a coffee grinder seems like a winner for the money
2. Ban maries: In everything I've ever done lower constant temperature has been a winner. I saw a kitchen water bath for 50 quid that could be run for a few days to get the extraction going.
3. Clearing the gunk: you'll want to centrifuge before filtering. I spotted a hand crank 'fuge for 50 quid that would make things a lot easier and less messy
4. Filtration: gravity feed is a no-no: you'd want a water by-flow system that creates a vacuum in the lower receiver tank. These can be expensive, but are essentially plumbing with some filter papers. I saw someone had built one from brass plumbing bits and bottles. The hard bit here wouldn't be connecting the containers, but making the fitting for the membrane. The pressure is rather weak, so all items that can hold together with glue and tape would suit. Barring that you can buy a reuseable unit for about 100 quid (I'd try and build one first: lab stuff is over priced)

Those were my thoughts looking at peoples steep guides.

Time to cook some foods, been cleaning the landy for sale all day,

When you get a recipe right, it's very satifying. I'm typing this chugging on my Island Sunshine recipe (Rum, Pineapple and coconut). Very nice thank you ;)
