Review of the Innokin iTaste VV By ZombieTuesday

DISCLAIMER : This is a review of the INNOKIN iTaste VV which I purchased with my own money from http://www.safercigs.co.uk at the UK Vapefest 2012. This review is my opinion and my opinion only and does not reflect the opinion of planetofthevapes.co.uk or in fact any other site or person. kapiche?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I have been wanting try a Variable Voltage device for some time now, so I decided that when I went to Vapefest, as an introduction to VV vaping I would try and find the easiest to use (IE out of the box) a
and most cost effective VV device I could as my introduction.

After a good look around, I decided upon the iTaste from the Safer Cigs stall as this device did not require me to also purchase batteries or a charger and worked out of the box.

At first I was a little concerned because it looked like the device only fitted proprietary atomisers and tanks, however the Safer Cigs chap (who was a very helpful nice chap .. but I'm ashamed to say I cant remember the name of!) showed me that with a small inexpensive adaptor this PV can be used with just about any atomisers and/or cart/clearomiser system - and indeed so far mine has spent most of its time with my new Vivi Nova on top of it … but more of that in a bit.

The kit comes in a nice presentation box .. along with an extendable USB charger with a two pin plug, a set of 5 spare tanks and 3 replacement atomisers in different resistances (These atomisers are etched with the following ohms and ratings recommendations on he metal of the atomiser itself : 3.2 Ohm 3.5 to 4.35V, 3.5ohm 3.5 to 4.5 ohm and a 2.6 ohm 3v to 4v) along with another 2.6Ohm already locked and loaded into the square magnet holder.

The device is a little different to a lot of PV's I've seen being square in profile. I chose the "chameleon" coloration ( a sparkly effect that sometimes makes it look either purple, green or black depending on the light ) It has a pen style fitting lid, a display screen with two small (but easy to hit) buttons to change voltage and perform other functions and a larger manual firing button. Overall I like the general look and feel of the device, having been used to ego batteries it has a good solid feel to it.

A nice design feature I should note is that the screen when not lit up is silver, making it look like the rest of the device when unlit .. and not like a screen at all … very nifty!

Moving on to usage of the device, the device was charged straight out of the box, so got to try it straight away.

First I should make a side note - when I bought this bit of kit I bought it with the intention of using it with some of my existing delivery systems, I was aware that the tanks are proprietary and was prepared to not use them (altho in actual fact I have used them a bit). As such I do not think it would be fair to dwell on this part of the product for too long. So ill get it out of the way now, I've (briefly) tried the cartridge atomiser system before and found it to be nothing but a way of delivering surprise amounts of e-juice directly to the mouth (this could be just me .. but anyway .. they were not my bag).

So Although it was never my intention to use the inbuilt cartridges with this system .. I have out of curiosity tried them … and am actually quite impressed with the results, I have had no leaks, and the system was nice and easy to use. In actual fact I now keep a couple of these filled with more odd ball flavours - The ease which you can quickly swap these heads around is awesome for such quick flavour changes.

Now I've just mentioned "the ease with which you can swap these heads around" and I guess now I need to go into a bit more details on that.

This system uses a strong Magnet instead of a screw thread, sounds weird .. but actually works very well. it means I can swap between my vision vivi nova and one of the supplied cartridge systems simply by pulling one off and putting the other on (bear in mind you do need an {inexpensive} adapter to use any 510 tank/clearo/carto with this system, but i DO recommend getting the adapters .. in fact more than one would make swapping normal 510 gear really easy, as easy as swapping the supplied cartridges).

See pics below :

Now ok … I realise because of the devices form factor - it looks a little crazy with the Vivi Nova on the top .. but I kinda like that ….. A wizards staff does indeed have a knob on the end.

Like I mentioned this device IS variable voltage I will now as a Noob best try to describe the operation of such .. and the other electronic features/gimmicks available.

the device has several neat functions some of which are (i guess) likely to be considered pointless by the seasoned VV'r. However as a Noob user terrified of blowing shit up and having no idea whatsoever of what OHM's go with what Voltage .. I have found them brilliant.

Possibly the most useful of these functions to the n00b is the detection and recommendation function. basically on plugging in a carto/clearo/cartridge/atty pressing both buttons (the + and - used to move the voltage up and down) the taste will show the ohms of your delivery device and then a second or 2 later show you the recommended working voltage range. - great way of making sure you don't push things too far!

As I mentioned above the voltage is increased and decreased with the plus and minus buttons - they are quite easy to hit for such small buttons - and do as they say on the tin.

I should point out here the last and possibly most useless function .. the Puff Counter! every time you move the voltage on the device the puff counter appears for a few seconds .. and tells you how many "puffs" you have had since the device was last turned on. Really it just counts the amount of times the main firing button has been pressed .. but I guess that equates to nearly the same thing. Its pointless, unnecessary and frankly I love it, although its a bit disturbing to find out I'm hitting on 745 puffs a day.

The charge state of the device is not shown on the built in screen … but rather by the colour of the firing Button LED when pressed, it is green for "good charge", amber for "running low" .. and Red for "too late! you should have bought a backup battery!" and speaking of the battery …

This device is 800mah and I find its battery life to be about equal to that of my ego-t 900mah batteries, which for me is about a day and a bit. I'm more than happy with that .. but to be honest I have no other devices to compare it too. I suspect more seasoned vapers with their separate batteries and big kits may find this a bit weak.

So on the whole .. as an introduction to VV vaping I personally am more than happy with this device .. I love the way it looks and the ease of use and swapping heads. I will now try to list the Pros and Cons as a summary

PRO's

The device looks awesome, nice design point and quality finish

The device has a few nice (gimmicky) boy toy features

swapping delivery devices is a sinch! (providing you have the magnetic adaptor) The magnet head connection is Very good BUT conversely will also have to go in the CONS section because of this as well.

The supplied cartridge system is actually ok … though I personally dislike this delivery system in general, I don't have a lot of experience but its better than the other version of the system I have tried.

Excellent price point when you consider you don't need to buy batteries and a charger - I personally couldn't find anything VV that was this cheap as a starter kit.

CONS

Proprietary magnet system! I like it but you WILL need an adaptor to use any 510 or other delivery system with this device. - they are not expensive tho, I would prefer to see Innokin provide one of these free in the box. (TBH I received my adaptor free off of the nice Safer Cigs guy anyway .. so I aint complaining!)

The charging cable - a: this only came with a two pin plug .. so would need an adaptor (it does fit into USB sockets tho) and b: it doesn't charge on a 510 fitting like all my other gear .. but all that means is I need to be more careful not to loose it.

The 800Mah battery .. while fine for me I guess would fall under performance for a lot of seasoned Mod and bigger device users.

Summary : A really nicely implemented, good looking and easy to use bit of kit that I would especially recommend to vapers new to variable voltage vaping.

Late edit at OPs request:

Updating this .. there is an important feature I forgot to mention in the review ... this item can also be used as a passthru while charging!

I no longer seem to be able to edit the forst post .. can a mod do it for me ? (done)
