Ally from Thunderhead Creations sent me this RDA for a try. I’m not paid to do reviews for anyone, just sent samples.
You wait all year for a RDA review and three come along at once!
The Thunderhead Creations Tauren Vortex 30 RDA
https://thunderheadcreations.com/products/tauren-rda-vortex-30
Thunderhead Creations (THC) are an established company who have released several ranges of products over the years, including the Blaze, Tauren and Artemis ranges of tanks and devices, and this is the latest in their Tauren range of atomisers. I’ve only ever tried one of the Artemis RDTA tanks prior to this and it was a good one that lasted me a wee bit until something newer and shinier came along, so I am slightly familiar with their work.
It's been a while since I’ve owned a big airflow dual RDA. The last one I had myself was the Goon, that ever-faithful cloud chucking classic that I’ve just never replaced. I think I may have found a new faithful here though.
The Vortex 30 is a (unsurprisingly enough) a 30mm beast of a RDA that will have you blasting clouds in no time, thanks to the easy-to-use features of the deck. It’s got a postless deck design so all you need to do is cut the legs of the included coils and fit them before dry burning, wicking them up, juicing them up and firing away. I’ve had an absolute ton of details from THC that explains their ‘Advanced 3D Vortex Airflow, and the ‘Heat Management System’ so if you want to read up on this sort of thing, I’d recommend heading over to their website for all the graphics you could wish for. I’m here for opinion, not technical details, but I will try to explain it all (clumsily) in my own words.
I’d also recommend having a look at the @SessionDrummer review on this forum. They’ve done a fantastic job with lots of photos and a good explanation of the features. Plus, the official POTV review is now up on the main review page so that’ll be worth checking out too, you can’t have too many opinions to read!
In the box you get:
1 TAUREN RDA VORTEx 30
1 Coil Leg Trimmer
2, 3 Core Fused Clapton Coil
1 BF Pin
2 Allen Key
Spare Screws
Spare O-rings
1 User Manual
1 QC Card
Design wise it’s a big RDA. I’m not sure how to explain it all in technical terms so have a look at the photos here and elsewhere. The deck is, as already mentioned, postless and there are big airflow holes all over it. Some nice, diagonal ones on the side of the deck and an under coil airflow system as well that has big holes on the bottom side to let the vapour out and up. And up top is their Vortex airflow system in the cap that has cut outs to direct the airflow down into the chamber to catch the coil then out through the drip tip. The top cap has some nice, raised bumps for grip, when you need to put the cap on and everything fits well together once you’ve broken it in properly. The chamber has lots and lots of holes in it for massive airflow and some nicely inscribed Tauren branding on it.
Back to the deck and the juice wells are massive. This thing can hold a lot of juice, and you’ll need a lot of juice as the included coils are also very good for chucking out masses of vapour. The wicking ports allow for a ton of cotton so if you want to go bigger with the coil diameter and put in some huge coils then you can. It’s all set up for it from the off.
In use it’s a dream to set up. You get a coil cutting tool in the box and they’ve kindly marked the 6mm slot for you to direct you to the optimum cutting length. All I had to do was cut the legs and fit the coils in the deck, using the included allen key, which fits perfectly. A wee dry burn on a low wattage to strum out hotspots and I was ready to wick it up. And wicking is also easy. I made sure to cut the tails a bit longer than the deck itself, due to the large wicking ports and just stuffed them in, with hardly any resistance at all. There really is a lot of room here and you could definitely go for bigger diameter coils if you really want to bust vapour.
After juicing up with a lot of juice it was go time. I started on 100w because why not? It was a little crackly, likely because I’d put so much juice in but once it settled down, I got a nice warmish draw, but not too warm, and a ton of vapour, and the flavour, the flavour was pretty intense. I use the same juice in all of my tanks, RTA, stock and RDA when I’m testing them out and this was the best I’ve tasted for a long time, easily on par with mesh RDAs and that is saying something. I pushed it up to 110w, still banging, 120w and it was cloudier still. I’m a bit of a weakling when it comes to heat and big clouds so I stopped at 125w but there was definitely still room for more with these fused clapton coils. I was happy sitting there though and while it was a warm vape, it was very tasty and there was no crackling or spit back at all whatsoever. I didn’t even bother adjusting the airflow as with a tank like this you want to be full pelt the whole time to see how big the clouds can go at your preferred wattage.
The coils were so good for me that I didn’t even bother trying out my own wire. No need when these ones worked so well, and the accessories in the pack are also very good, you get spare allen key grub screws, along with flat headed ones as well. There’s also the all important squonk pin, for the squonk enthusiasts, and both pins protrude well enough.
Overall the Tauren Vortex 30 RDA is fantastic. It’s a joy to get an atomiser that just does everything it advertises and is so easy to set up.
I’m more of an RTA kind of guy but I do enjoy busting out clouds now and again so if I do feel like that then this is the tank I’ll go for. The airflow is very smooth, despite the marketing mentioning tornado like airflow with the Vortex 3D system and the flavour is as good as advertised.
You can order one from the official THC website here: https://thunderheadcreations.com/
They’ve also kindly set me up with a discount so pop gitchy75 in the code bit and you’ll get that.
Thanks again to Ally at Thunderhead Creations for sending this lovely tank for me to try out.
