A VAPERS OPINION OF TEMP CONTROL & VAPING

So for the last 8 weeks almost exclusively I have been using temp control mods with ni200 coils, but prior to this I had only dabbled with temp control. Now, whether it was the fact that I had been using kanthal coils for so long and had simply just become accustomed to them or not, my initial conclusion was 'what is all the fuss about'? Everyone I was in contact with seemed elated with the new technology or at least with Evolvs technology. For me personally, it seemed that although temp control prevented a coil from burning when set right, the vape was somehow weak and if anything a little unsatisfying. This was the dabbling... build a coil, have a go and put it down and then return to the kanthal and raw wattage for satisfaction. This would repeat time and time again. For whatever reason, I took a temp control mod and subtank with NI200 coil away with me with no Kanthal alternative. I used it for two days solid and on my return home continued to vape it. I continued to vape it without really feeling the need to go back to a kanthal coil, this went on for a little while until at one point I realised I had no charged batteries. I hunted in the draw but all I could find was an iStick. So i put a different subtank on the iStick but this time with a Kanthal coil.. vaped it, found a nasty taste, not overbearing, but nasty none the less. I put this down to the subtank not wicking well, so I built a Billow V1 in dual coil at 0.5ohm and wicked it as I'd always done. I put it on the iStick. Now, although I will confess, my coils have never been nor probably will ever be world class nor my wicking ability if I am entirely honest, it was no different than it has ever been... yet... still... the taste was still there, something that just tainted the flavour of my juice. I spent time dropping the wattage to try and remove the nasty taste and although it did indeed mute the nasty taste, it was still there, lurking in the background.. Thankfully the 2amp charging on the 2 x Samsung 25R was quick so I returned to the temp control and temp control has been almost exclusive since.

My choice is now to use temp control and NI200 coils, it just seems cleaner the flavour is crisp.

So, the Evolv chip has always been the preferred choice for Temp Control but recently the China chips have just got better and better to the point where now given the choice I would personally pick up a China chip (obviously depending on which one). The chips that have become my favourite surprisingly are not YIHI! My favourites at the moment are the Tesla 160w chip and the latest SXK chip. SXK certainly don't seem to realise what they have - they do not seem to boast about it, in fact on their own FB page they call it a clone chip which it certainly is not, it is nothing like an Evolv chip in design. This chip is solid and performs outstandingly well. It’s the same chip in the new Zero mods, the Nebula Mods and Flask Mods they make, which come in 40w, 50w and 60w versions. All are performing flawlessly and offer and real smooth and rich vaping experience. The Tesla is a different creature, it has character and how it is designed in reading temperature and maintaining it is noticeably different yet still excellent. I read in different groups that some people have had a bad experience with the lower wattage versions of the chips they offer, mainly commenting with regards to the resistance capability. They have just improved their chips with 80 changes to offer a minimum resistance of 0.1ohm but it is really not needed. There is talk that the perfect resistance for temperature control is 0.14 - 0.17ohm but more and more we are seeing subtanks with 0.2 - 0.5 NI200 builds and they perform excellent and it's the same for DIY. They need less wattage and temp control seems to need less adjustment to maintain a consistent temperature. Back to the Tesla chip, if you attach an unused coil, dry, no liquid, cotton will burn, it needs liquid on the coil to find its way. Once it has done a reading with liquid you can run the tank dry and when the coil is nearing dry it starts to deliver less flavour and eventually will just say 'temp protected' and will not fire. The vaping experience is excellent with a wet wick and juiced up tank, it seems to give off very dense vapour (depending on your setting) makes for a satisfying vape. Given the wattage capability it also suits temp controlled dripping atomisers as it supports temp control throughout the wattage range to the max 160 watt.

At some point it would be good to create a scoring system for the various chips that we all try as temp control can be hit and miss depending on the chip you use. I am sure it will become very reliable in the future but for the time being it is still worth being cautious with the mods we buy for this purpose. I'd like to get the members feedback on the different chips they try and record a score 1 - 10 for vaping experience - we know it will very much depend on the build / coil & wick used and the atomizer but finding a basis for informing members about what is good and what is not would be a useful source of information.

I would score the temperature control chips that we have personally tried as follows

1) EVOLV DNA40D TC - 8

+ : reading & consistency
- : wattage capability

2) EVOLV DNA40D BIG SCREEN GOLD VERSION TC - 7

+ : reading and consistency
- : wattage capability & glitchy

3) SMOK 80W TC - 2
+ : Price & wattage capability
- : reading and lag

4) TESLA 160W TC - 8
+ : Wattage capability & reading
- : adjustment during temp / fluctuation

5) SXK 50W TC - 8
+: reading, consistency
- : i am yet to find one but if being really picky then the wattage capability and 5 click to lock in order to change temp setting can be fiddly

6) SXK 60W TC - 9
+ : reading, consistency, 60w seems enough
- : i am yet to find one but if being really picky then 5 click to lock in order to change temp setting can be fiddly

7) ARCTIC DOLPHIN 50W TC - 5
+ : Has plenty of features outside of temp control, reading and consistency
- : Battery drain is a pig and if being really picky wattage range could be better

8) ARCTIC DOLPHIN 40W TC - 5
+ : Has plenty of features outside of temp control, reading and consistency
- : Battery drain is a pig & wattage range could be better

9) YIHI SX330 V4S - 6
+ : Performs well to 50J consistent & reading good
- : Must remember to lock attie, memory setting doesn't work in temp

More and more temp control seems to be offered as a standard on most mods but the results do very a lot. If you are fortunate to have access to different temp control mods with different chips try it and see.

My conclusion now, temperature control is a must have if you really appreciate flavour and a consistent vape.

Do remember the above is just my own opinion based on experience to date, not scientific, yours will probably differ, but if you have any comments of your own to add please reply to the thread and lets add a source of knowledge to the list to help people know a good chip and a bad one. I personally will update the list I have created, as I use the chips more and more. If I feel there is anything that would mean a decrease or increase in score I will make the changes so please feel free too.

Enjoy your weekend,
Steve

nice information angelfiremods
i have zero mod 60w with tc function. but i noticed that this device cannot go up to 60 watt.
i used 0.2 coil in wattage mode and set it for 60 watt, the device adjust the power to 51/52 watt. do you have the same problem or i just have a bad device?

It sounds like you have a bad device. Do you know if you have version 1 or 2? The Nebula I use is 60w and I have no such problem but it is version 2. No adjustment at all, it maintains power throughout. We have version 1 50w but this maintains power it does not adjust wattage down.

yeah i think i've got the bad one. i dont know whether it's the 1st version or 2nd . but overall i do agree with u. it could perform the same (or even better) than evolv DNA40.

I think I've finally got the hang of tc - it's taken me ages though. Built a 10 wrap 2.5mm ID 0.3mm Ni200 kayfun lite and it's performing perfectly.
I think it's a great feature for people who aren't confident in their builds and want to avoid dry hits.

I never liked temp. control in the past - I found the vape too gentle and too cool. Then I discovered twisted kanthal and nickel - don't ask me how it works - how the chip can still read and control things properly, but it does, and \i'm getting the warm vape with a decent power behind it that I like - and my device has the decency to inform me when my wick is dry and I need more juice - very cool :D

I'm really glad that I came across this thread. I have been looking at TC mods and tanks but I have been really holding out until I could have some sort of consensus on where to go with it. I really like my Zero and the SX chip, so I was going to go safe and stick with what I know. I have always loved the look of the Tesla though, but never been fully confident to take the leap. I love the sound of a mod that aesthetically has character but has a chip to match as well. In my mind it looks like it would pair up nicely with a Smok GCT so that is what I intend to get at the end of the month. You have pretty much sold me on it. ;)
