Univapo has sent over their latest starter kit, the Unix, for me to try out. I was very impressed by their Unico kit that I reviewed a while back so I’ve got high hopes for this one although this is more definitely aimed at the new vaper and mouth to lung crowd.

The Unix kit comes in a fairly small box with a photo of the device on the front, a list of contents on the back, and a scratch ’n’ sniff and colour codes on the side. The main tray slides out from the side and opens like a book to reveal an instruction leaflet under which the kit is laid out in a foam tray, they even screen printed my name on the review samples… look mum I’m famous (or is that infamous!)

Univapo sent out all three colours (red, silver and black) but I chose the red one for the review.

Specifications:
  • Battery size 77.2 x 23.5 x 18.2 mm
  • Atomizer size 16 x 57.3 mm / 2ml capacity
  • Output 5~16 watts
  • Internal 1000mah battery
  • Usb-c charging
  • Two coils included, 1.6ohm & 1.3 ohm

The Unix mod is a small stick style mod with a standard 510 connector up top, don’t be expecting to put your 22mm atomizers on here though as it’s only 18mm across the top plate and I believe it will also only fire with 1 ohm and above coils. The paint finish seems quite durable having survived several weeks in various pockets and has a slightly matte finish which aids on the grip front.

There’s a tiny led screen which is fairly basic but gives you all the information you need (the lines in the photo above are due to the camera and aren’t visible in use)

Control is all done via the large scroll wheel on the front, this has a nice click between settings when adjusting wattage up or down in 1 watt increments and you can lock this off from accidental adjustments by clicking the fire button three times. On to the fire button itself, this requires a fairly firm press and you need to have your finger or thumb over the slightly raised area sporting the Univapo logo, if you’re off to the side it won’t work.

Charging the internal 1000mah internal battery is done through the USB-C port on the bottom and in my tests this peaked at 0.71amps taking 1hr 38min with a recorded capacity of 880mah. This was a little disappointing, particularly the total charge time, but it’s really the only complaint I have against the Unix battery.

For the test version I picked the kit with the “C” version of the Unix tank which has added child safety features, these mean that you have to push down on the tank to release the base and access the coil and you need to lift up the fill port cover before it will turn to open. This did make it difficult to change coils as you have to remember to push down to gain purchase on the coil otherwise everything will just spin around, the “lift up” feature on the filling ring was possibly more helpful as it’s much less likely to get opened accidentally and dump a load of liquid in your pocket. Once on the mod airflow is adjusted by turning the whole tank rather than the airflow ring which is something I’ve seen before on smaller tanks like this and you quickly adjust to this. The tank is glass so it’s suitable for those who like classic MTL tank crackers, sadly there’s no spare included though. It’s all topped off with a rather nice 510 drip tip with an optional dust cover which is held on by a magnet.

Two coils are available, a 1.3ohm and 1.6ohm, and these are both definitely aimed at the beginner or MTL market with quite a narrow bore. They’re both simple round wire builds and once again coil material isn’t mentioned anywhere but Univapo were kind enough to let me know they are Kanthal which means these are good for those amongst us who are nickel intolerant.

With the 1.3 ohm coil I found this to be a loose MTL draw almost bordering on a restricted direct lung, you can of course close the airflow down but I found this resulted in a marked drop off in flavour so I felt it performed best with the airflow open at 13 watts.

The 1.6 ohm coil has a slightly tighter draw and it found the airflow adjustment was more effective here without the same drop off in flavour on the other coil. This performed great at 12 watts with the airflow open about half way.

Both coils lasted a good while as well, the first coil I used lasted 10 days before the flavour started to decline and I felt it was time to change over.

Pros:
  • Simple starter kit for beginners
  • Good performance from the coils

Cons:
  • No spare glass
  • Disappointing charge time

Conclusion:

Another solid if basic entry from newcomers Univapo, the Unix kit ticks all the boxes for the new vaper or someone looking to quit. I was once again impressed by the flavour and performance of the coils, something I also found with the Unico kit.

Univapo also has several other items in the pipeline which I’m also looking forward to taking a look at soon.

Thanks to @Univapo for sending the Unix kit out for review.
