Voopoo Argus P1 kit review by Antony Lord
Voopoo have sent over the latest addition to the Argus series and this time it’s a dinky little mouth to lung starter kit, the Argus P1.
Specifications:
Inside the box you’ll find the Argus P1 with a pre-installed coil hidden under a box of extras. The extras consist of a USB-C charge cable, a lanyard, instruction booklet and finally a second pod. The Argus P1 is available in five colours and I was sent the green version to test which has a shiny anodised finish highlighted by gold accents.
Voopoo describe the Argus P1 as having a “futuristic mechanical design” with an anodised zinc alloy and polycarbonate chassis which allows you to see some of the inner workings of the P1 with its black printed circuit board. First impressions out of the box are that it’s a bit of a looker with an almost car paint quality finish and gently curved edges which make it comfortable to handle. Even with those curvy edges I was pleasantly surprised to find that this will stand upright on a desk as Voopoo have given the P1 a flat bottom.
Those exposed internals look cool and really set off the design including the integrated lanyard hook which extends into the polycarbonate shell to give the impression of a heat pipe which appeals deeply to my inner nerd. It is quite heavy though for such a small kit weighing in at 73 grams and that green anodised finish has proven to be something of a fingerprint magnet!
The Pods sit in a recessed area on one corner of the P1 and are held in by two magnets. This is an autodraw only device and you can also see the airflow sensor tube in this area with an adjustable airflow slider on the side of the kit located just above the USB-C charge port. The airflow adjustment can be altered from a wide open loose MTL (almost bordering on a restricted direct lung) to an eye wateringly tight draw and it doesn’t get moved about in pockets with just the right amount of resistance to any movement.
One area of the Argus P1 that impressed me was its charging capabilities. With a standard 5V/2A usb charger I measured a 2.4 amp peak charging rate with a final recorded capacity of 674 mah achieved in around forty minutes. This is impressive enough but the P1 has another trick up its sleeve in the form of PD fast charging and as it happens I recently picked up a new PD compatible charger so I put that to the test as well. This instantly kicked things up a gear charging at 15V with a peak charge rate of 0.89 Amps, the P1 now charged in just 20 minutes from flat!
Whilst this is happening the four LED lights on the inside of the P1 will gently pulse showing you the state of charge. Those same four LEDs will also light up whilst you’re vaping but rather than showing the charge status they will light up one by one (from the bottom to the top) depending on the strength and duration of your puff, the onboard Gene AI 1.2 chip will use this puff data to intelligently match the power output to your vaping style.
One downside to this arrangement is that you don’t get much notice that your battery is flat. The LEDs eventually turn red once the battery is depleted but by this point you’re going to want to find that charger pronto!
Two Pods are included in the kit with 0.7 ohm and 1.2.ohm coils respectively. These are clearly marked on the rubber fill plug, the coil material isn’t stated but Voopoo were kind enough to let me know that they are FeCrAl (Kanthal) mesh coils so they should be suitable for anyone. These use the four port airflow system I saw on the last Voopoo MTL kit I took a look at and this does seem to be quite effective at delivering airflow to the coil with really crisp flavour coming from the coils. My preference was of course the 0.7 ohm pod as I prefer a more open MTL draw.
The Pods also utilise a leak proof design and I haven’t had a drop of liquid below the pod even after letting one sit unattended for a couple of days. As an added bonus it’s also compatible with previous Argus pod.
Pros:
Cons:
Conclusion:
I’m quite taken by the Argus P1 and I’ve been impressed by the flavour and draw from the Pods, if I hadn’t received another MTL kit to use at the same time I’m pretty sure this would have been the only MTL vape I would have needed for the past week or so. It’s not perfect though and I wish that the LED indicators gave a better indication of your charge status, this is offset by the quick charging capability even on a standard 2amp charger.
Many thanks to Voopoo for sending the Argus P1 out for review.
