What's new

Why have more than one mod?

Here's a few commas and full stops, you seem to have lost all of yours.

.... ,,,,, ..... ,,,,,

I've noticed that whenever someone criticises some else's grammar, there are always grammatical errors in their own post. They should name a law after it. :D

I'm with you, though. If Facebook is anything to go by, punctuation is an outdated convention. The modern way is to simply pour out a stream of consciousness and let the reader sort out its meaning. I'm genuinely unsure whether it indicates a failing of our education system, laziness or a deliberate and calculated act of defiance by those who have the ability to do better if they wanted to.

Does it matter, I often find myself asking. Traditional media demanded a strict knowledge and use of language for those employed in it, but the Internet is a playground and vehicle for all. No qualifications necessary and thankfully, none required. Everyone gets to talk to everyone. Have their say. Perhaps that's seen by upcoming generations as more important than ridged adherence to the rules of English.

Language evolves and the Internet, for better or worse, is allowing those previously excluded, to affect and effect change at a much greater rate than previously possible. It may be a tidal wave that cannot be withstood by those who consider the rules of written language important and worth preserving.

At any rate, I have concluded that it's probably best to never comment on it, lest you fall to the inevitable, inescapable power of the as yet unnamed law of grammar policing, which dictates that you yourself will cock it up.

*wonders if there's a word for responding to a thread entirely in vaguely amusing/annoying internet memes*

there are things that bother me and things that don't .... uppercase letters I rarely use myself unless it's for EFFECT ..... and I use way too many ellipsis.

punctuation and grammar can used in a creative ways in what I think of as 'written speech' ... which is what a forum post is, it's more like poetry where you can take liberties with the written language.

what does annoy me though is people using one word when they mean another, peaked, bear, ....... that is not fun or creative.

a lot of the time for me it's just the constant struggle to get people to read what you've written in the way you meant it to be.

...... and when I read something without any punctuation and all in one big block I read that as someone talking very fast, without pausing, without any interest in what I'm thinking about what they ate saying ..... it's the written equivalent of "rar rar rar rar rar" ... it's not conversational.

*I* think I'll buy a new mod.
I *think* I'll buy a new mod.
I think *I'll* buy a new mod.
I think I'll *buy* a new mod.
I think I'll buy *a* new mod.
I think I'll buy a *new* mod.
I think I'll buy a new *mod*.

I just like words.
I like the ways in which you can express yourself simply by typing a character on a piece of paper, and you're 100% correct in that it can be a bit of fun in a place like this.

But that sad part is that in 2017 punctuation and grammar, once outside of the education system, seems to be not very important anymore. And that sucks.

I over-punctuate when I write, I know that. Posting on a forum feels akin to chatting to folk one on one and when I'm in a f-t-f convo I'm very demonstrative and animated...in written form punctuation for me serves as a substitute for the lack of gestures and facial expression, tone of voice - everything non verbal really. I'm a self confessed grammar nazi though, I cringe reading stuff on social media but the internet is different from RL communication and I refrain from commenting, what does bug me is when folk over-use txt spk, it's fine in a text but it's creeping into other avenues of communication. I used to be a university lecturer and I can confirm with a heavy heart that I marked numerous essays submitted by undergrads who actually used txt spk in academic essays.

To put different tanks on with different flavours in
yep. and you also need lots of different coloured tanks, to help you remember which flavour is which. Red, for cherry or strawberry , green for mint. watermelon or mohito , brown for chocolate. etc, and maybe some slightly differentshadestank /designs in sme colours , n case you want to vape watermelon and mohito on the same day. Oh! and then you need a new mod or two to avoid those really nasty colour clashes, and....ummm Ok, that's probably some version of shinyitis creeping up on me, or possibly entirely consuming me :18:

*face to face, *conversation, *real life, *text, *speak

Kind of ironic dissing text speak when you yourself are using "abbreviations" like "f-t-f" lul, grammar nazi my arse :D

Hmm. Did this thread accidentally get merged with the "Things that get on my nerves" thread?
