Kind of ironic dissing text speak when you yourself are using "abbreviations" like "f-t-f" lul, grammar nazi my arse :D

I did say that communication on the internet is different from RL, and when I'm talking about 'txt spk' I'm referring to over use - when it starts to get in the way of communication rather than facilitating conversation. If u no wot i mean ;) sumtimes txtspk iz 2 much :p I'm in casual conversation here with people who I assume are equally conversant in the practice of communicating via the internet in an informal capacity, my written style reflects the context. When you overuse '2' instead of 'to/too', or '4' rather than 'for' it can hinder understanding rather than facilitate. The magic lies in knowing what the rules are, and when to break them, whether that be for effect or just coz you cba to type out 'because' and 'can't be arsed' in full. :18:

I think it wholly depends on the medium. Twitter, for instance, limits the available space and therefore "txtspk" is necessary to cram in everything you want to say. In a forum venue you have all the space necessary and there is, imho, no such need. However, abbreviations can be useful to save effort; Imho, afaik, etc.

I see why you call yourself yappy now, TLDR ;) Well I did really and a fair point well made. What's your stance on excessive use of emoticons? :)

Oh I love emoticons! I love those things peeps sometimes do on FB where they represent books and films using only emoticons and you have to guess what the film/book is :) One time a student dared use a smiley in an essay he wrote tho...I was most CERTAINLY not 'lolling' at that...and neither was he when he read my scathing comments regarding the usage of said emoticon.....:rotflmao:

*peeps - people
*FB - Facebook
:) smile
*tho - though
*lolling - laughing out loud
:muhaha:

Wow, that went slightly off topic :P

I love emoticons but I'm old enough to only know a few - I can't be arsed to go find new ones. I taught for a while - literacy of all things - and it used to drive me mad how bad the students could be with punctuation but the thing that really, really narked me off was when they'd be typing something, get a red line underneath and then just choose the first "correct" spelling even if the word was completely different to the one they meant!

I used to be a grammar nazi but that has taken it out of me, I have no fight left so I just don't bother correcting people, it's just fighting the tide.

I've noticed that whenever someone criticises some else's grammar, there are always grammatical errors in their own post. They should name a law after it. :D
give this law a name
Fixed...you...you...you...NUMPTY you. :D

I propose that we call it...*drum roll*............... [note: far too many dots for a grammatically proper ellipsis]....... .........NUMPTY'S LAW.

All in favour? You may either say "Aye" , award this proposition some karma, or simply commence using the term "Numpty's Law"as appropriate :D

Derailing is de rigeur on here, @CeeMee .

Time to post this again:
