I received the Wotofo Manik Mini via the POTV Wotofo Giveaway, thank you @WotofoOfficial
Straight out of the box I noticed just how small and stealthy this device is, surprisingly so.
The instruction manual is too small for my eyes, very hard to read. The device has a built-in 1000mah battery, charging is via a micro usb port, on the base. The power on button, is on the side of the device, 5 clicks turns on, 5 clicks off. Pressing the menu button 3 times allows one to cycle through the wattage range, which is 1 to 30w. Holding down the power button resets the puff counter. There is no fire button option, the Manik is autodraw (suction only) activated, which for me worked just fine. Airflow is from the side and via some jiggery pokery (i couldn't work it out) the air is drawn into the device, I assume relying on the coil bore to dictate the amount of air.
The Manik comes supplied with two disposable pods, one containing a Nextmesh 0.6ohm coil and the other, a standard 0.6ohm coil.
The pod (3ml standard, 2ml tpd) is filled via a rubber bung on the side of the pod, the fill hole is fine when using a standard 10ml but can get messy with unicorn bottles and other shortfill bottles, which is a fairly standard problem, for me, with most pod systems.
The mesh coil is recommended to be used in the 15-18watt range, I always find those wattage recommendations to be too high and in any case with a new coil it is best to start low and work up, I started at 11watts. The vape is quite airy with the mesh coil, I would say a restricted lung inhale. After about 20 minutes use I remained unimpressed with the flavour and upped the wattage to 15watts. An immediate flavour improvement but the vape was far too hot, and I do so love a warm to hot vape, across all my gear, in fact, it is almost an absolute requirement for me. I tried different juices, all 50/50, I wasn't prepared to burn the coil out, messing around with 60/40s etc. No dice, I wasn't getting on with the Manik Mini.
I turned to the mtl standard coil, same juices, starting at 14 watts, from a recommended range of 18-22w. I soon upped to 16watts, this is a much better vape, I prefer the tighter air, a far superior flavour. The vape is still far too hot though, I'm burning my lower lip ffs. Back to 14watts, less flavour, still getting a burnt lip, I give up.
Pros:
The build quality of the Manik Mini is superb.
Wattage being adjustable from 1 to 30w is a real plus, one can fine tune their vape experience, far more than one can using pod systems which have presets, like 10, 12, 14 watts and so on.
Battery life is decent, for a 1000mah battery.
Standalone, the pod mod is an excellent piece of kit, high quality, simple to use, effective, it really is a lovely little thing.
Stealthy, 007 style, a really compact pod system.
Cons:
I don't like the concave nature of the pod mouthpiece, it is kinda slippy, I hate it when things slip out I prefer convex, whilst that is subjective, I do find it slightly annoying though.
Disposable pods, why? What a waste, these are substantial pods, they deserve to be reused, look at the Innokin Sceptre, it is very similar. Wotofo could surely have designed a pod where one replaces a coil, rather than having to throw the whole damn thing away (not environmentally friendly either!). The cost of buying replacement throwaway pods, over the cost of a pack coils, coils can be dear enough, throwaway pods? No, fuck that, and you've got to find the things, China, Brexshite, customs, courier fees, bollocks to it. I've not seen these replacement pods available in the UK yet, maybe it's too soon, the pod system is available though
A fierce heated vape, unless I lower the wattage but then I have to send a search party out looking for the flavour. Maybe my pods are Basil Fawlty, all the more reason to have a pod where you can CHANGE THE BLOODY COIL.
Summary:
A game of two halves, a wonderful pod mod, ruined and destroyed by disposable pods that have no flavour, so you up your wattage and burn your lips to bits, I dread to think what the heat is like, at the recommended wattages. Am I going to hunt down more replacement pods, rather than bang in what should be a much more readily available coil, no chance. Tragic it is, game over.
Final score: 3/10
