Hi,

I’m pretty new to the vaping game and am at my wits end with it to be honest. If you don’t mind bearing with me, I’d like to tell you my short story and where I am now and if anyone has had any similar experiences and most importantly, if anyone has any advice?

So... I had been a smoker on and off for 20 odd years. I made an effort to cut right down and would only smoke when I went out for a beer with my brother (once a week). I met him one evening and he pulled out a Smok V8 baby loaded with “Moonies” from “The Milkman” (10ml 3mg bottle). Needless to say I fell in love with it and went and bought myself a Smok Prince Stick Baby starter kit. I loved my brothers Milkman liquid, so got “Pudding” (again 10ml 3mg); loved it! Invested in some Dinner Lady juices (Lemon Tart) and loved that. Found a local store that done Milkman in 50ml short fill bottles, so got “Little Dipper” and “Crumbleberry”. I added 10ml of “Just nic it, Nic Salt, which the shop provided, to each of them. They were great. A few days later, they completely changed flavour. First i thought it was maybe the nic salt I added, then I started researching about vapers tongue... anyway, I left it for a day and bought “churrios” in 10ml 3mg and it tasted really harsh and peppery! I did get some new “strip” coils and thought it may be them. Tried some M2 coils which were better but not much flavour! Then I got some mesh coils and more “Pudding” in 10ml 3mg and everything was great again. Then thought I’d get some of the original Milkman, and that had a ridiculous peppery harsh taste. I could go on and on about all the coils and other juices I’ve been through, but you get the idea. I have tried other brands and flavours and it all just seems so hit and miss. I read loads of good reviews about a Custard flavour and got it home and tasted like medicine! I’m thinking of getting a better device such as the Uwell Nunchaku, but just can’t afford to keep throwing £100’s at it to just see if it’s better!

Those first flavours I tried were just so lovely and deep and creamy, now most juices I try just seem to either be really harsh and peppery or have some weird sweetener medicine taste!

Sorry, I know it’s s bit of a hodgepodge story and I can’t explain every detail, but I hope you get the idea.

Is it coils? is it the device? Is it the nicotine? Is it vapers tongue?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

when you were adding the nic did you shake the bottles a lot to mix the nic? Sometimes you may need to let it rest for a while. I use dinner lady lemon tart and a couple of their others I usually let them sit after shaking for about 20 minutes.

Smok has bad quality control issues although I was lucky with ones I bought and had a few coils last me three weeks.

When you filled your tank with the Juice did you let it sit for a while to soak intot he cotton?

Vapers tounge is when you use the same juice all the time and since you have been swapping juice I doubt its that.

Hi @Mike_1980 and welcome to the planet.

i cant help much with the kit and coils as ive not used them before but just mentioning the word smok and there could lie part of the problem as smok QC is shite and many reports of coils only lasting a day or two.

peperry taste usually means cheap or naff nicotine thats going off.
tpd 10ml bottles are usually ready to vape while shortfills need time for the nic shot to settle after much shaking. usually give it a day or two. not tried any with nic salts though.
ive not tried any of the milkman range as it used to be very high vg and i wont go over 70vg as coils just dont like the thickness and burn out very fast.
there was a debate a while back about shortfills tasting quite different to 10ml tpd range and i can agree there is some difference.
what i do know about a couple of the milman range is they used to have diacetyl in them but for the testing to pass tpd these were changed for the uk market. weve also seen quite a lot of fake american juice before so really it could be a number of things.
vapours tongue can affect everyone especially if you vape the same juice for days so variation is the key here. ive not had it in almost 4 years but i do have 24 mods and tanks on the go with a different flavour in each :)

which custard did you try that tasted like medicine?

if you want to try some decent custards then check out post 2 here POTV Vendors & Recommended E Liquid Suppliers

Just to add I have found some nic salts and nic shots dont work well with certain juices

Certain flavour concentrated can apparently taste peppery to a select group of people, as well. A vanilla ice cream one, if I recall correctly.

Thanks for all the great info. What an amazing forum!
I had read about the pitfalls of Smok and do think I need to try a new device at some stage

I do mix all my short fills well and have left them for over a week. Maybe it was a dodgy nic shot! Anyone got any recommendations as to the most reliable nic shot?

The Custard I bought was by “the custard company”. I’m not blaming the actual company as so many reviews have had nothing but good things to say about it. I’m sure it was something I did wrong.

Also, can anyone recommend a really simple but creamy vanilla type ice cream or custard flavour? I like sweet!

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream can taste peppery.

I think it's the Vanillin in it ..... vanilla is a spice, so maybe some people taste that as black pepper.

vanilla pods that we use in cooking only contain about 2% vanillin.... I can't say I've ever tasted vanillin on it's own. It might not be that though..

Propylene Glycol 57-55-6 diol >= 75% and <= 80% no taste
Ethyl Vanillin 121-32-4 aldehyde < 5% sweet, creamy, vanilla, smooth and caramellic
Vanillin 121-33-5 aldehyde < 5% vanilla, vanillin, sweet, creamy, spicy, phenolic and milky
Butyrate <ethyl-> 105-54-4 ester >= 1% and < 10% fruity, sweet, tutti frutti, apple, fresh and lifting, ethereal
Acetyl Propionyl 600-14-6 n/a < 3% toasted, buttery and caramellic with marshmallow and molasses nuances
Isoamyl Isovalerate 659-70-1 ester >= 1% and < 10% green, fruity apple
Ethyl Maltol 4940-11-8 alcohol < 3% sweet, burnt cotton sugar candy like, with jammy, strawberry notes
Cyclotene 765-70-8 terpene < 1% sweet, maple, bready, caramellic with nutty nuances
Dodecalactone <gamma-> 2305-05-7 lactone < 1% fatty slight fruity
Anisyl alcohol <para-> 105-13-5 alcohol <0.5% cherry, vanilla, creamy nuances, cocoa, licorice, anise
Water 7732-18-5 n/a <10%

what else there is going to taste peppery? Anisyl alcohol maybe?
