You don't necessarily risk to blow the unit, but you could well get an awful taste.
Be particularly wary of the coils touching each other, as that will lower the resistance, which can put a strain on the battery. Get yourself a multimeter perhaps.
Consider this is a pretty tight one, but with a little bit of patience you should do fine.
I coil mine so the coil is right over the air intake, like a spheroid.
