What are the main differences between the L and the W? Is it mainly the ability to use dual coils because of multiple posts?

Also, as far as wicks and coils go, what are recommended?

The dual posts and has holes through posts for wire, regarding coils .25 is what usually use but having a selection helps as some time use .30 .35 twisted or 4x1 flat kanthal, all drippers and users find what they like running re wick cotton "organic" you can get from Wilko for a big bag £2 just make sure you prime it and its got enough juice on.

The 306 needs a different drip tip the one I posted is a 510 and suitable for your devices.
