Advice Please - Coil/resistance issue?

Hi folks, like that friend everybody has who only turns up when he wants something, I'm back at the best place I know to ask advice.

Having recently purchased a Kayfun V5 clone [it was too cheap to be the genuine article], I've got a problem. The one comment I can make is that the machining appears and feels to be of excellent quality.

I've only had the thing a few days, but have already been through four coil changes. All coils were configured using the Steam Engine Calculator; ie, 28 gauge Kanthal; 2mm coil diameter; 11 wraps = 1.6 Ohm. Burning at 10 watts.

I was perfectly happy vaping away for the first day, but on the second day suffered a dry burn after allowing the tank to run dry. I changed the wick, refilled and all seemed well until I noticed the resistance had changed, and was hovering anywhere between 2.0 and 5 Ohm. I re-coiled and re-wicked, which ran perfectly for a while until the resistance started running wild again... I won't bore you with the other two coil changes. Changing mods and batteries show similar results.

My suspicions lie with the terminal screws, which are of the rounded rather than square cut variety. I have experienced difficulty in trapping the wire to make hard contact, with slipping after tightening down, and have had to take a full turn round the thread to secure the wire.

I've ordered Clapton Wire, which greater diameter I hope will negate any contact issues, and I'm just about to look for replacement, square-cut screws. (FastTech, I hope.)

Any similar experiences and other advice will be very gratefully accepted,

Cheers,

Billy.

That sounds very strange. I use 28 gauge kanthal in mine running at 1.3 ohms for my manabush fix and it's been very stable and always reads the same.
I turn my wire round the screw 90° and always clockwise so when you nip the screw up it doesn't try to push the wire out.
Can you post a picture.

I 180 mine down one side round the back and back out the other side, inside the 'walls' if you know what I mean, I use 28awg too. My screw heads almost touch the side walls so it's securely trapped on both sides.

... if you get my drift.

Very possible. Never had that problem with kayfuns but I've a taifun with a screw that likes to wiggle free every now and then. Causing exactly the issue you've experienced. Ohms rising causing the coil to overheat.

Hey Mick, I'm both Scottish and an ex-seaman, so what we call "widdersinns aboot" is an omen that would weave such a spell as to attract every Bogle, Ghoul, Gyrcarlin, Warlock and Seawife, et al, between Shetland and somewhere around Derbyshire in England. I always follow the sun, as I don't actually like vaping remedial juice of the Rowan tree. You've hit the nail on the head as to why wire often refuses to secure. Thanks for pointing out that extremely serious issue, but it's an error I always take precautions against.

Sorry mate, I've just re-coiled and forgot to take a picture. I took great care in coiling as recommended by Simong, making certain all was in good order before wicking up, but the Ohms are right now flitting between 1.75 and 1.80. In which case I'm wholly convinced there's a conductivity issue somewhere, as stated by the Eyeball Kid.

I was aiming for 1.5 Ohms, but with the mod being new to me I'm misjudging the total leg length by a couple of mil, hence the over-reach in Ohms.

Cheers,

Billy.

Hmm , It's beginning to sound like a post or screw issue isn't it.
