Hi bunglehaze
The kits sold by vendors are really designed for vapers who have never tried mixing before, have little knowledge of mixing and have no equipment to hand. If you have some kit and the knowledge of what you actually need, then it may be worth you buying separately. Most kits also come with step by step guides to mixing and enough equipment for several mixes. Once you start with mixing and actually discover not only how much you can save, but the taste options available to you, I'm sure that everything which was put in the initial kit will be used several times.
When I started mixing, kits were not so common and I had to buy individual items. I wasn't actually quite sure exactly what I was meant to be buying and after I had started a mix, finding that I was a needle or another item short. At least with kits, you know it's all in the box
