With regard to the "window", the local hardware store usually carries 8"x10" sheets of plexiglass roughly 1.5mm thick(perspex for you brits) cut it to fit your hole and that will protect the screen. You'll see in the rough mock up pic I attached, my screen sits behind the cutout, with the plexiglass in front of that. There's also ways to flush mount it but it depends upon the specific build. Be creative, trial and error, yada yada yada.
