What's new

Experiences from my first year of vaping

Just a short way into this and I've just read ... "anyone that says any different can fuck off" ... if someone said that to me down the pub, or in any conversation, I'd probably walk away at that point and let you finish your ramblings on your own. What's with this kind of attitude? OK, so this is you having a rant ... but you lost me right there.

"I see a lot of people, even here on this forum, talk about "sub ohming" being for kids with backwards caps and tattoos and MTL being for the quaint elderly chap. I'll point out now, that this is absolute horse shit and anyone that says any different can fuck off."

Where's the attitude? ....... It could have been put a little more politely but the sentiment that if younger people with snap-backs want to use a MTL setup or that older people want to sub-ohm massive clouds then they should be able to without any one passing judgement on their gear or vaping style. ... and (even though, I do joke about the snap-back thing myself) it's a sentiment I agree with and if people think otherwise then, yeah they can fuck off as far as I'm concerned too.

Simon, I agree with the sentiment and I don't disagree with any of the points made. But this rant is posted in New Users Corner, not down the pub with your mate. It's the attitude I disagree with ... this is what I think and if you disagree you can fuck off. As you say, it could have been put a little more politely, more people might actually listen rather than be switched off. Agreeing with the sentiment shouldn't mask the in-your-face attitude, particularly as it was an otherwise excellent post.

fair enough, I understand where you are coming from.

As i approach my first anniversary of being cigarette free, I wanted to put together a short (ha!) diatribe of things I've learnt over the past year, including things I wish I had known when i started out. This isn't going to be some sort of guide to what e cigarettes are, or what the health benefits are, but more of a personal history. I'm sure some people will disagree, but I just wanted to put it down on paper, so to speak, so I can look back in a few years in remember what it was list at the time.

I've learnt alot over the past year, but I just wanted to make a couple of points that I wish I had known when i first started out on this journey!

1. First, and foremost, use whatever works for you. So, you have a Nautilus Mini? Are you using that or smoking? Oh, you're still using the Nautilus Mini and not smoking? Well then, fuck whatever anyone else thinks and carry on using it!

As long as you're not smoking anymore, who gives a shit what you're using? (I have friends that have, somehow, been using Vype pen equivalents for 2+ years, but fuck it, it works for them!). I moved on from that because if i hadn't, I would have started smoking again!

I see a lot of people, even here on this forum, talk about "sub ohming" being for kids with backwards caps and tattoos and MTL being for the quaint elderly chap. I'll point out now, that this is absolute horse shit and anyone that says any different can fuck off. I desperately don't want to start smoking again, and i'll do whatever it takes to not smoke again, whether that is using a Nautilus Mini or a Cleito. I'm a middle aged dad who uses sub-ohm atomizers, not because I want to blow clouds bruh, but because it's the most satisfying form of vaping for me that keeps me from wanting to smoke.

2. Take others advice, but don't treat it as gospel.

There's a lot of solid advice to be garnered from this forum. There's a lot of experienced people who have been vaping for years who are more than willing to help out, but this can sometimes be a double edged sword.

I used to take the advice of more experienced vapors as gospel, which was definitely the right thing to do in some instances, but not in others. So, some people use the Kayfun Mini v3 as their all day atomizer, this does not automatically make it the best atomizer on the planet for you! So, some people vape MTL on 3mg nicotine and others vape direct to lung on 24mg nicotine and everything in between. People's tastes and styles vary enormously.

Just because you have a Kayfun Mini v3, and everyone else is happily using 12mg e liquid, doesn't mean that's right for you. Find it too harsh? Can't get a vape out of a Kayfun that is as good for you as a cheaper cartomizer? Then that probably points to the cartomizer being the right bit of gear for you!

Just as an example, I've been through a literal fuckload of atties throughout the past year, most of which were hailed as being the "best attie available for XYZ". (don't get me wrong, i was entirely guilty of making these same claims!), and you know what I use now? MTL Nautilus Mini. DTL Aspire Atlantis Evo. Both of them are cheaper cartomizers. I've honestly spent, probably upwards of £5000 on gear and e liquid over the past year, trying to find that elusive "perfect vape", and would you have it, it was there in front of me all along.

3. Vaping isn't an intimidating as it first seems, but don't be an idiot.

The first thing I feel I need to point out is that you should, at least, be aware of ohms law. Don't end up being a news article. But, reading these news articles can result in the whole vaping "scene" being a little intimidating. I call it natural selection. If you decide you are going to build a 0.001 ohm coil in a mech mod with a cheap, Chinese battery, and not practice battery safety, that's just plain fucking stupid and you will end up with a pipe-bomb in your pocket.

If, however, you use some common fucking sense, you'll be absolutely fine.

If you want to rebuild PLEASE INVEST IN QUALITY BATTERIES (https://www.fogstar.co.uk/) whether you are using a regulated or unregulated mod.

3. The differences between MTL (Mouth to Lung) and DTL (Direct to Lung) are pretty sizable.

These findings are from my own personal experience and may differ from person to person.

- The higher the nicotine content, the more "throat hit" you will get, but the less "flavor" you will taste from your e liquid.

This is far less important when you first quit smoking, as your taste buds will be fucked, so you wouldn't be able to taste your e liquid whether you like it or not. The plus point to this is that you won't be able to taste the nicotine in your e liquid either. Over time, you will notice that the flavor from the liquid starts to come through a little stronger, but sometimes you will also be able to taste the nicotine in your liquid (which isn't a nice taste).

- Nicotine quality has a massive impact on how a higher nicotine liquid will taste.

For MTL vaping, I would read the flavor profiles of a load of these fancy e liquids, stick them in my Kayfun and not be able to pick up much but the taste of nicotine. Mouth to lung vaping on higher nicotine e liquids, for me personally, was a bit of a minefield. Some liquids were smooth as butter and full of flavor, others just tasted of nicotine and were way too harsh for me to vape (even at the same MG level). For this reason in particular, I would advise that if you find a nice, high nicotine liquid that vapes like you want it to vape, stick with it for as long as possible. I would jump between liquids all the time, and i've lost count of the about of liquids I've had to throw away because they were unvapeable for me.

- When you first quit cigarettes, for me, DTL vaping sucked.

For me, I tried DTL vaping a few months after I quit smoking and it put me off for another 9 months. MTL vaping is designed to replicate a drag on a cigarette, DTL vaping isn't. For me, DTL vaping was something i gravitated to once I had lost the "need" for the nicotine hit and the throat hit that came from high nic MTL vaping. A lot the flavor profiles that you read about in these e liquid descriptions really do only come through when vaping DTL, but this is pointless when you first quit as your taste buds will be too fucked to taste anything anyway. You will also miss the throat hit from a higher nicotine liquid when you first quit ciggies.

- PG and VG levels have a big impact on your experience.

PG is more of a flavor carrier than VG, and produces more of a "natural throat hit" than VG. For this reason alone, a lot of people start out on higher PG liquids. The PG carries enough flavor to re-invigorate your fucked taste buds, and helps with the cigarette-like throat hit. Over time, much like high nicotine content, the requirements for these tend to dwindle.

VG is also a flavor carrier, but not as much as PG. Higher VG liquids tend to have a smoother throat hit.

A 70PG 30VG 18MG e liquid will be quite harsh and will give a strong throat hit.
A 70VG 30PG 18mg e liquid will be less harsh (generally speaking) and will give a softer throat hit.

The general consensus is this:

Higher VG with lower nicotine levels (6mg or lower) is best reserved for DTL vaping.
Lower VG with higher nicotine levels (12mg+) is best reserved for MTL vaping.

Again, people all have different tastes. There are people on this forum that vape 24mg e liquid DTL, but the above guidelines might help if you're struggling, but again, if your vape doesn't fit within these guidelines, doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong! If it works for you, it works for you!

----

That about sums it up for now. I'm sure there will be a load more things I add over time, but, if anything is taken away from the big old wall-o-text above it should be this. If you're not smoking, you're doing it right.

I have to say I liked this post , I am new to vaping and use an Evod pen , rebuild my own coils and just started mixing my own liquid at 60vg 40pg 10mg which at the moment works for me , so at the moment it has cost me all in less than half the money I was spending rollups in a month , in the next month or two it will probably cost me nothings unless I get tempted by a mod , I don't think I will be going back to the cigarettes , vaping works well for me , I was amazed how easy it was to come off the rollups I had tried and failed .
A big thank you from me puts my vaping in perspective .

1. First, and foremost, use whatever works for you.

This is so true. Like a lot of people I started off with 18mg nic in one of those Ego pen things. I used a lot of mint and tobacco 50/50 PGVG liquids during this time as the flavour wasn't really strong/nice enough with the fruit flavours. Then I got a better set-up and started using thicker liquids, typically 70/30 VGPG, and a whole new world of flavours opened up to me. Then one day I went to stock up on my month's supply of liquid in my local vape shop. They had a new range in which had some tasty sounding flavours, but none of them were 18mg nic. I took a punt anyway and got one of them in 12mg nic. I found the flavour to suit me better, so I made the complete switch to 12.
I have recently got a new set up which has a rebuildable tank, so now I'm trying sub-ohm and liking it so far, even with the steeper learning curve. Example: I tried two liquids from Phileas Fog - karma frappe and lemon grab. Both were 60vg and 12mg nic. The lemon grab was a really nice lemon biscuit/cookie, so was spot-on. The karma frappe tasted like REALLY awful coffee though; like the shit that tesco sells as value range or the crap that they have on hospital wards. So I tried it again in my nautilus and it was grand. It tasted like those little cold bottles of frappe that starbucks sell. I really think it was the the nicotine that messed it up. So now I think I'll make the jump down to 6mg nic and see how that goes.
