FFS! Vaping a gateway to drugs now...

a little off topic sort of.
i stopped using my usual supplier who i have used for over a year a couple of months ago as they started selling dry herb attomisers with the words WINK WINK in the advert. i just thought we get a bad press anyway so why give people more ammo to aim at us.

I don`t know about Nicotine being a gateway as such but I do know that everyone that I know who does take any form of illegal drug (and there are a fair few of them) also smoke.
I smoked (for several years) before I partook of any other drug too.

I`m not sure that it`s anything directly to do with Nicotine as such, simply that people who are likely to try illegal drugs are also more likely to partake of the legal ones.
All these people I refer to above also drink alcohol regularly too, is that a gateway as well?

In my case I quit all drugs completely in early November last year and in late November I decided to get rid of Cigs too so I switched to vaping.

Pure speculation on my part of course. I`m not a scientist, just my opinion based on my observations and personal experience.

How low are they prepared to go. Next they will be saying vaping leads to paedophillia.

LOL what a load of bollox :grin2:

To be fair, it was green that got me smoking cigarettes in the first place and not the other way round like most 'studies' claim.

Whenever there is mixed public opinion on a device or substance that brings what it does to the market, those lobbying against it ALWAYS use the 'gateway' argument, it's been proven to be a load of bollox by something like 8 different scientists now, in light of all the marijuana reclassification going on in the states right now.

The problem is, and is also the problem with many other subjects of similar tone is the face in which they provide their argument behind. Generally speaking when we see these articles that are anti-ecig, they come across as a respective, professional, independant company.

Whenever we, us the vapers start up awareness campaigns or articles promoting vaping, it's almost always clear exactly where the campaign came from, a vaper. Well in the common eye of the braindead thinker they're gonna be excited about the prospect that "Well yeah, of course they're gonna be promoting it" and feeling like they're thinking 'outside of the box' for realising that.

However when that same idiot is reading the anti ecig articles, they don't know who it's coming from, all they know is it's an independant body who are just looking out for everyones safety... they have no identity.

Speaking as an individual behind a number of faces, or speaking as a facade of faces behind an even bigger spread. Well the braindead thinker isn't going to use their brain, they're just gonna let the media do their thinking for them and go with the 'public opinion'

Pisses me off.

this article fails the "first paragraph test."

E-cigarettes are [...] a powerful gateway to dangerous addictions, said a pair of Columbia University scientists, including a Nobel Prize winner, on Wednesday. (my emphasis)

the first paragraph test is "if an article uses any of the major logical fallacies in it's opening paragraph then it's bullshit and you should probably stop reading here"

this is a prime example of an "argument from authority"

this scientist is a Nobel Prize winner!!1!1!11!eleven!!1 and obviously everything they ever say on the subject of science must be the gods honest truth and the last word.

While (for once) the Nobel Prize is in a related field, the premise is that if you are exposed to nicotine, then you are more predisposed to develop an addiction to other drugs.

This is the same shit gateway argument that they peddled for cigarettes and it's still bunk. Everyone in the western world already tests positive for nicotine as it's already in 2 of the most widely consumed foods (potatoes and tomatoes)

Also to call e-cigs "they are pure nicotine-delivery devices" completely misses the point of what they actually are. NRT products are "pure nicotine delivery devices" - e-cigs are smoking replacement devices that as well as delivering nicotine, in much more pleasant flavours, also replace other smoking ritual actions with similar ones and as such are much more effective than "pure nicotine delivery devices" like NRT products.

I'll skip the obvious bit about e-cigs not using pure nicotine as i) it's fruit that's hanging far too low, and ii) not even a Nobel Prize winner can be that stupid.

Smoking was the gateway in for me (was in the pub one night, fancied a smoke so tried a straight instead and that was that), vaping was the gateway out. I had something else to play with, new flavours, coils to build and the other just became less of a priority. I started vaping over 3 years ago, I stopped the other 2 years ago. Without vaping I'd still be in the cycle which was doing me a lot of mental harm so I am truly thankful to vaping for giving me a way out :)
