First 'e-cigarette child death': New York baby dies after drinking liquid nicotine

If it was a bottle of nicotine base then it's more than a little bit tragic. Bottles like this should come with child proof caps to be honest. I know mine does but why not all of them.

The thing that really struck home, to me, regarding this tragic incident, is that our homes are full of stuff that can be dangerous and/or fatal, to our kids, and it's our duty, as parents, to be ever vigilant.
Altogether, an awful, and very sad, incident.

Is this another one ? or the same one from a few days ago ?

Still a tragic loss all the same.

"Among the chief concerns is that many e-cigarette refills are marketed in a very similar way to fruit juices and sweets, inadvertently making them attractive to children."

Yes, harmful liquids come in bottles that look attractive to children. It is the parent's responsibility to make these liquids unavailable to their children, it is part of life. Honestly, it feels like america creates stories to fit their agenda, whatever that may be, on any topic.

What jumped out at me from another report is that the child didn't get hold of eliquid belonging to a parent. If I remember rightly it was a grandparents. Every parent knows what lethal substances their child can get hold of in most situations, if you saw a child with a bottle of bleach you would instantly understand the dangers. I had this conversation with my sister after I first started vaping and from her comments I have made sure every parent entering my property knows eliquid is a serious danger to children. Whilst I generally keep my liquids locked away when I have guests, who is to say one hasn't rolled under a table. Parents need to be aware of the dangers before they can be expected to have that instant recognition like they do with other household poisons.

Sorry. That's just colour and has a child proof cap, never seen a bottle of bleach called "mums custard" or "skittles" have you? put safety caps on them now. One child is one too many regardless of the circumstances.

Tragic news. Saw this yesterday on an ABCnews video feed which despite the headline then went on a tangent at pains to argue this is the main reason ecig products should not be sold to minors.

First Child's Death From Liquid Nicotine Reported as 'Vaping' Gains Popularity - ABC News

That absolutely sickened me tbh as clearly selling eliquid to under 18s has no bearing on the outcome here, and anyone that uses their media airtime/influence to push such an agenda as far as im concerned has blood on their hands, when they should use their position to argue for something that will make the small but real dangers that accompany vaping a little bit safer - or at least to try and educate consumers to real rather than agenda driven dangers.

Very sad for the family concerned, however the media shitstorm just makes my blood boil.

Childproof caps? Of course.

Take the opportunity to emphasise that while it's safer for the adult, you need to be wary of it around children, as you would with any household toxins, medicine, booze, etc.

Using this as an excuse to spend 5 mins ranting about how these shouldn't be sold to minors (which the industry is doing anyway) ...? Fuck off and die.

This toddlers parent(s)/carer(s) should be arrested for rank stupidity & sentenced to 16yrs hard learning. The ONLY reason I can see for this "child-proof tops" report is (being the USA) so that a lawsuit can be filed against the nicotine/e-liquid manufacturer.

I note there are no demands that bleach/knives & scores of other dangerous/lethal devices, liquids be banned.A report I heard the other day was that kids in America are now SETTING THEMSELVES ON FIRE! FFS,did nobody ever tell them that this highly dangerous practise could prove fatal?

It seems like a lynch mob out for eLiquid.

Don't get me wrong, I feel very sorry for the family for their loss and the loss of life for the little'n but the way the article is written, here's a big hint of eLiquid=eVil.

Our homes have in them so many dangerous things. Everything from cleaning products to sharps to pointy coffee-table corners. Little ones are to be protected by their parents from such dangers. A bottle of meths is a pretty purple colour. Looks yummy, amirite? There are a range of knives sold in vibrant colours that would appeal to small eyes as fun to play with. Running around playing and not knowing that a collision with that corner of the coffee table will cause an injury will cause an injury eventually.

As parents, it's their duty of care to prevent such things from happening. I don't have kids myself but I do have nieces and nephews and know that if it's dangerous, keep the kid away until they can understand the potential for harm caused by everyday objects. In the case of chemicals (cleaning or otherwise), child-proof caps all the way and keep them out of reach. You know, just like the bottle bloody says! Sharps, keep 'em out the way. Coffee tables... put some bumpers on them or get a blunt coffee table.

Having brought common sense into the mix, however, we have to remember we're dealing with the U.S. If a kid got a concussion from slamming its' head into a table, the parents would probably find a way to sue Ikea. God bless America! *salutes*
