Hi,

I'll be making my first potion shortly and looking for your input on how much PG/VG percent to use as a starting block. I can't find it specified on the pre-mixed juice I've been using so I've nothing to compare it with.

I'll be using 54mg PG based nicotine and PG and VG diluents, and I'm quite happy understanding the nicotine quantity to make my required strength (and the safety aspect).

Also I believe VG is thick and therefore might be better thinned with distilled water or vodka. Is this correct and, if so, what percentage do I dilute to. And what's the benefits of vodka against good ole ' agua?

I plan to make the vape first without nicotine or flavour and test it, then once I'm happy with it add the nic and flav. Is this the stupidest idea you've ever heard or an ok plan?

Thanks in advance.

Alan

First of all you need to know that PG provides throat hit and while VG provides vapour.

Most premixed juices are 70% PG and 30% VG, you should start there and adjust the PG/VG ratio until you are happy with it.

If you are mixing VG with PG and flavourings you don't need to dilute it with distilled water or vodka. Only reason to dilute it with water/vodka is to make it wick it better if the juice is too thick (VG heavy juices). Usually between 1% to 5% water/vodka is enough to dilute it. When you are making VG heavy juices you significantly reduce the throat hit, adding vodka provides throat hit as well as making it wick better, while water helps only to wick better.

I don't think making the base without nicotine will be good enough to judge but if you would like to try go ahead by all means. We all learn somehow. :)

I would suggest you to make separate bases of your own required strength of 100% PG and 100% VG in separate bottles, you can play with these without adding flavours until you find the perfect ratio of PG/VG that you are happy with, then you can add flavourings.

Hope this helps. :)

If you're doing a test mix, try to aim for a small target quantity so if it isn't likeable , there isn't so much to abandon. A target quantity of a ml or 2 is usually enough for test mixes.

The amount of water/vodka to use when diluting VG will depend on how thick the VG is. I tend to use Boots glycerine and usually add about 10-15% water prior to mixing as it's usually quite thick. If your nicotine base is VG based then your final mix will probably end up thicker than with PG base.

I don't use tobacco type flavourings often, but they are usually a lot stronger tasting than fruity type flavourings, so if you're doing a tobacco flavour mix, I'd start off with a low percentage of flavouring and see what it comes out like.

Leaving mixes to steep for a few days can sometimes improve them a fair bit, so don't throw away mixes if you don't like them straight away.. give them a few days to steep and see if they improve.

Good luck and have fun mixing. ;)
