It is possible to burn a stock coil and only briefly notice a burnt taste. After that, the flavour can go back to normal-ish. The problem is, even a slightly burnt coil can reduce the volume of cotton in the coil. This can create small gaps which, if your unlucky can let juice through from the tank into the chimney and over time, result in a leaky tank. Juice coming out of the airflow holes will be a sign of this. No choice but to replace the coil if this happens.
