Help! - Vape advice for historical TV drama

It appears to use ccell coils maybe, just put vg in one and see if that works [or add like 10% pg to the vg, mix 9 ml of vg and 1 ml of pg together, nothing else and fill it) since that will lower the boiling point of the vg, and for that little pen it might have a set voltage.

Cbd vape pen batteries have adjustable voltage sometimes, more often then cigalike nicotine vape pen batteris, and have a higher high setting

Hi @Violet,

I think you'll struggle to fit a proper vape (that produces enough vapour to be convincing) into the stem of a pipe that size. The smallest I am aware of is about 16mm wide.

It's possible you could use a tiny device such as the justfog minifit into the bowl section of a pipe... maybe....? Though I don't know how you would activate it.

There may be some disposable devices that are thinner, and on the plus side, they tend to be draw activated (so the actor wouldn't need to press a button). But not sure whether they would produce the amount of vapour that you need for a production.

You def want to be using a higher VG juice if you want dense looking vapour.

It's possible that one of our more practical members such as @vapesmarter or @Vapaneezer Scrooge would be able to customise a device to make it fit into your prop.

Cheers, Martin

I've been tagged

I love period dramas like taboo (a bit dark that one though)

the first question I would ask does the actor vape before you even begin because if the person does not he might well cough a lung up, remember that person will be inhaling anything your prop master makes which is a tricky thing with insurance, unions etc etc

however, to convert a clay pipe into an e-pipe to produce a cloud of smoke is very tricky due to battery autofire and of course the juice it would be practically impossible in such a small area

a straight stem meerschaum type pipe yes that may be possible though hmmmm

edit

I do have Alfie he is a very photogenic doggy he has told me he is a born natural actor for the stage....

As actors still smoke cigarettes I assume they could do the same with a real pipe.

If I was to go for a pipe. It would have to be a yogi pipe, Lots of money, but its the best. And if your fellow workers are on actors wages, this should not be a problem hahaha :)

Justfog do a 14mm clearomizer that might be worth looking at. Or, if that's not right you could contact Jac Vapour and see if they have any NOS V3I's and old tanks laying abount. Something like that might be siutable.

The vapour production is largerly going to be down to the liquids and viscoisity you use though. Go high VG if you want more vapour.

I would say it might be worth seeing if you can fit a Cig-a-like vape kit into the stem, you may also need to drill small holes into the stem to allow more air to get inside as the person inhales on it. You won't get a lot battery life out of it but if your prop master can make the stem detachable, you can switch batteries between shooting.

In terms of the vapour being produced, there's not much that can be done, starter kits tend to have a very small battery and very limited output so what you get is usually what you get. Most starter kits also require liquids that are 50VG/50PG or higher on the PG side to wick correctly, the last thing you want is your actor to get a dry hit while filming because they will coughing during takes if that happens.

Or just not show actually smoking the pipe, hanging out of the mouth and holding with some cool affects? Or if they smoke, why can't you use an actual pipe?

surely the way to go is just to ditch the pipe smoking? i doubt any potential viewers of the historical fantasy drama are going to complain that nobody is smoking pipes. i will emphasise fantasy drama.

It's probably an integral part of the character......
