All excellent advice above,but I would add that you try a Tobacco juice at first,and try to mimic your smoking actions as much as possible i.e vape outside if that's what you did when you smoked at home.
You would be a very lucky fcuker if you sussed out your favourite juice,mod & tank set up straight off the bat.Just go for a pen style all in one at first(AIO)with either a Nautilus 2 tank or a T20-S tank fitted(MTL tanks,pre-made coils) and get some cheaper juice from LiQuid or similar(I bet most of us did).

I was smoking for 36 years and on 50 a day when I switched to vaping with 18mg in the Nautilus mini and eleaf 20w tank, a set from Amazon for about £50. Soon bought another so I always had one while charging the other and a different taste for the change.

@theDuke has pretty much covered everything! Except for one tip. Buy a 10ml bottle of menthol and if you get a flavour you reallly don't like, don't chuck it (waste of money) but add a squirt of the menthol and you can't taste much else lol.

Stick with it because it is worth it! Don't worry about slip ups, we all had them. Just keep calm and vape lol

I quit about a month ago, I haven't looked back since. MTL is definitely a good way to start, as it closely replicates the action of smoking. I would advise starting with a standard tank first off, just to get used to vaping, I like I am...before going down the rebuildable route. At this stage, you'll just want that nic fix straight to hand...and not be messing around building coils. That's my opnion any way, and it's how I started. I'll move onto building later on when i'm ready.

As an idea what nic strenght go with. well that depends on how much you smoked. I was on 20 pre-mades a day, so I now vape 12mgs strength with my Zenith tank using 1.7 ohm coils, & and 6mgs with my Nautilus 2 using .7 ohm coils....works perfectly for me. I use stock coils, so don't know anything about rebuildable set ups. I have acquired since, many more MTL tanks that I've yet to try!

If you were a heavy smoker 30-50etc..then 18mgs would be better in a plus ohm MTL tank. But if you choose to use 'sub ohm' coils in an MTL or DTL tank, then no more than6mgs..otherwise you'll get nic headaches and dizziness..which I found out to my displeasure during the first couple of weeks, as was trying to vape 12mgs in that Naut 2 tank on .7s! Don't do that..it's not nice!

For mods...well..there's a plethora of brands/ mods out there to choose from.....I started with a popular and relatively low cost option....an Aspire Zelos starter kit (which came with the Nautilus 2 tank), and then quickly got a 2nd mod, a 100w Aspire Typhon (I have since bought a couple more different mods). If you're going down the MTL route, then you don't need a super high powered mod...50 to 100 watts is more than sufficient as MTL tanks don't use very much power.

I vape between (depending on which tank i'm using) 10 - 23 watts. A 50 watt Zelos with a Naulitus two tank or a Zenith...with 1.7 or 1.8s coils respectively, would be a good place to start. And generally speaking, you'll get about a day or two worth of use inbetween charging. Plus, no need to buy separate batteries, as the Zelos and Typhon have them built in. Just a USB socket adaptor (or just use a USB socket in a PC) is all you need to charge them. They aren't expensive, the Zelos kit cost me £40 from Ebay.

So, I hope that gives a basic insight and idea to get you started.
