I know a lot about battery safety, but still don't know why a circle of electrical tape to cover a nick would be bad?

Right, I remember at one time most questions about batteries here would get my name tagged, and I would answer them to the best of my ability.

However, there is one thing I have never asked that doesn't make sense to me.

I have a Molicel P42A, and somehow there is a nick right in the middle of the battery, as if something caught it, that is about 0.5MMx1.5MM in length.

I know rewrapping is what should be done, and I will do this when I have some wraps, but why can't I simply wrap some electrical tape the whole way around the battery, where the nick is, so it will definitely not come loose as a temporary repair so I can use it until I have wraps?

I know the battery will not be able to make any connection through the nick, as the electrical tape would be covering it securely, so why can I not do this? Or can I, it's just more responsible to give advice to rewrap a battery than a temporary repair in case newcomers saw this and thought it was OK to cover every part of their battery in electrical tape lol?

It is just really puzzling me as to why this would not work safely, and was hoping someone might be able to explain why?

Thanks everyone, Conan.

Hi mate, electrical tape will make an effective repair but bear in mind that wrapping the tape around the existing wrap will make the diameter of the battery slightly bigger so may not slide into the battery recess on some mods.
Always best to rewrap the battery but the electrical tape will protect the battery as a temporary measure.

Thanks mate, I did think about the diameter being slightly bigger but for the mod I am going to use it with this will be OK.
I thought it would be an effective temporary repair, as for the life of me could not work out why it would not work.
I will of course rewrap the battery but it is nice to know I can use it until I get some wraps.

No worries Conan. Sticking a piece of tape over the damaged bit is not very effective as it could come off as you put the battery into the mod but wrapping the tape around the battery so it sticks to itself is much better.

Yeah, I can see why doing that would be bad, but where I am wrapping it around and sticking it to itself I couldn't think of any reason why it would not work as a temporary fix.

I've got a few batteries that have Nick's in the wraps and have fixed them with electrical tape and once I get too many I then rewrap them with new wraps. Have to admit I can use the repaired one for months on end before I get round to re-wrapping them. The electrical tape lasts ages.
