I finally made a Clapton wire! And it came out very tidy (for me) 26g core 32g wrap.
Unfortunately it all ended up in the bin.
The next skill I have to master is how to get a tight wrap of the sodding stuff!!

I used a drill. No idea what the fishing spinner would be for.
I pretty much followed @cloudcuckoo video.
Held the thin wire in my fingers and let it do its thing. Took a couple of goes before I found the correct tension etc. I was a tad concerned about getting a friction burn, but I play bass so I guess my callouses help :)
I just need to learn how to turn it into a tidy coil now. He makes it look very easy..it isn't.
My ambition is a parallel wrap with some thick wire, just because it looks so pretty. :)

I've never made my own wire and only ever used the pre made stuff, but after a bulk wire purchase the other week I've got more than enough to have a crack.
I'd seen a couple of videos on YouTube where they attached one end of the core to the drill chuck, the other end to a fishing spinner fixed to a solid surface. Then they took the Clapton wire and threaded it around the core whilst the drill was spinning at a low speed. I think it was an M.Terk video I saw or possibly an Ohmboy, can't remember. I'll have to have a look at @cloudcuckoo 's before I have a bash.

Either way I think they look very tidy. I've got some Washburn/Warwick callouses too so I should be sound [emoji6]

Edit: It wasn't them- it was GrimmGreen.

Hoping to get some more how tos up over the next week, far too much FAFF in a lot of the ones of seen. glad it helped @AceMelon

Congrats Ace. great feeling when you finally make one and then you realize how easy they are....well at least you will very soon. The finger holding works just fine and saves having to faff about having tried other methods too.

To anyone else straighten your 26 in a drill.....get a roll of 32 or whatever gauge you are using. Place the roll on your lap resting against your body and make a few turns. Then simply pinch your fingers and spin on top speed and it does not get easier than that. Give it a shot you will be pleasantly surprised. usually the hardest part to anything is to actually start.

It's a 'swivel', or more precisely what I see people using are 'swivel clips' (a swivel with a clip on it) ... a 'spinner' is like a shiny lure that spins around for catching mackerel. Not meaning to be a pedantic twat, just trying to help people who walk into fishing tackle shops looking for them. :)

To keep the wire tight while wrapping, make sure at the start and end you take the outer wire over itself. Or do a fused Clapton :)

i use squidoode technique for holding the wire, it makes it way easier to get tight wraps as you can feel the wire wrapping
