Hi folks!
I just did my first build, on the Unity Dripper. I bought some wire and a winding jig but to start out I used a premade coil (Kanthal A1 26awg, 2.8 inner diameter, 11 wraps, 1.2 ohms) in a single coil configuration.
First attempt I screwed down the post screw too tight and broke the leg off the coil!
Second attempt went better, got the coil positioned well, at the right height for the air hole. Dry burned it, squeezed it with ceramic tweezers, stroked it a little, got it glowing from the centre outwards. All going smoothly now.
Then I had to wick it... *sound of gnashing of teeth*
I did it in the end, after about 5 aborted attempts. In the end I moistened the end of the cotton and squeezed it and twisted it into a point in order to get that sucker through the coil (then cut off the moistened squashed part, trimmed it up, fluffed it out and pushed it down into the juice tray).
I'm currently dripping Buddha Vapes Cream of the Custards at 15W, restricted airflow, MTL, and the taste is excellent!
So... any tips on how to get that cotton through that tiny tube of coil a little easier?
I mainly build TC coils and wicks where less cotton is used than with a standard build for wattage vaping for example...
...With some cottons and despite using less, sometimes I get exactly the same thing happen despite building for years and a hell of a lot of experience with a whole array of tanks, RBAs and atties lol. I do exactly as you've done yourself if it happens and simply touch the very tip of the end I'm twisting onto my tongue for a split second, the tiny bit of moisture just allows you to mould the end into a finer point that holds to get that first bit of cotton through the coil to gently pull and twist the wicking through .
As you've said, you immediately trim off the nasty end piece anyway. Then fluff up and do the usual to perfect your wick. Amounts aren't really a factor, sometimes some cotton just will not twist into a nice fine point to get the first bit through the coil, even if you're using the PERFECT amount lol .
I also religiously wash my hands before handling cottons!! I have definitely noticed a difference in it's much harder to roll the end of a wick into a tight point that holds for long enough with super clean fingers . On the odd times I haven't washed hands before handling cottons, twisting the cotton into a fine point was much easier, as the hands produce natural oils (think fingerprints) .
Just carry on with the same solution as you used in your initial question bud . If you had badly over wicked, it wouldn't be vaping very well and you'd know. How is it vaping? Can you take hits in relatively quick succession or are you having to wait between puffs for the wicking to catch up??
You make no mention of it vaping badly and in your latest post you also mention it's vaping nicely, so I'm assuming you have infact done a pretty good job of wicking and you've used the right amount . You've just been hit by the well known awkward piece of wick bug lol . It happens from time to time.
