Hey guys,

Does anyone know the rough AWG equivalent of Kanthal Ribbon?

Thought it would be easier to put everything in one thread for future reference for everyone (including myself).

Thanks!

No you can't have a AWG figure for flat ribbon doesn't work like that cheers Andy

I don't think it can be graded like that as it is width & thickness eg:6×10
unless there is something I don't know AWG is the gauge measurement in

Ah, absolutely agree with you guys, I was thinking more equivelent.

E.g. I know that 0.1x0.4 ribbon is (roughly) the equiv of .20 Kanthal A. (So 1.5" of 0.1x0.4 ribbon would give roughly the same resistance as 1.5" of .20 Kanthal A).

I have just tested some 0.5*01 Kanthal D Ribbon wire with 4 wraps. I get 1.2 Ohm, amazing stuff.

I've been hunting around for info on the ribbon
what I've been able to find about the resistance is:

0.6 x 0.10mm - 24,5 ohm/m
0.5 x 0.10mm - 29,4 ohm/m
0.4 x 0.01mm - 43ohm/m
0.3 x 0.10mm - 48,9 ohm/m

The best comparisons I can find are

0.2mm kanthal a1 wire is about 43 ohm/m
0.25mm kanthal wire is about 29.3 ohm/m

so as near as I can tell:
0.5 x 0.1 ribbon is the same as 0.25mm wire
0.4 x 0.1 ribbon is the same as 0.2mm wire

has anyone else found out anything different?

Based on this, I'm trying to get 0.4mm but the only place I can see at the moment is on ebay, a seller in Denmark - but it's not cheap that way.

I hope the mesh company get it in - their 0.5 ribbon is a very good price :) very good! £3.75 (£3 until end of march) + P&P for 10 metres

Yup, running 0.7 x 0.10mm (1 inch) and getting 0.5 ohm. So sounds about right!
