BBC News - Ballymena cigarette factory JTI Gallaher to close

Whilst it's sad to see folk being put out of work, I think there is a definite link to the amount of smokers switching to vaping and the decline in sales of analogs.

The above report says the TPD aims to cut the number of smokers by 2.4 million across the EU.

We must surely have more than that level of vapers just in the UK by now.. I wonder if the antz will be trying to claim the credit for the reduction in numbers that are actually due to folk switching to vaping/dual fuelling?

Could it be that this is due to an increase in the price of cigarettes and the switching to rolling tobacco instead of straights over the past few years? From what i understand this factory only made straights and then only B&H and silk cut as the major ones and at nearly £10 for 20 i can see why the closure.

My aunt works/ed there. She told me a while ago that Gallahers had been investigating ecigarettes (testing for toxicity) and hadn't found anything malicious. Probably nothing to do with this news but I had forgotten about it.

I have no doubt that when anyone in power cites records of those who used to smoke analogs but now don't, there will be no mention of vaping. Just a big pat on their respective backs for how well they did and what good people they are for talking us all out of smoking. Even though it's highly likely their so called efforts did nothing but anger the majority of us whether it's vaping or sheer will power that made us quit analogs.

One day there will be no smokers, and possibly no vapers, but it can see the slimy bastards finding another soft target to hit out at while saying how well they did on previous missions of misery inducing misinformation and underhand tactics
