Making your own concentrates/flavourings?

Gonloopy, I've been considering this and what Dr F's research might show for a while now :S - I fear that vanilla may be one substance and anything that has coumarins in might be another (the flavour compound, not the anti-coagulant meds of the same name). Coumarins have been used as a flavouring agent in tobacco for a long time. Many natural flavourings contain them - not limited to -aniseeds, absinthe, fennel, coriander and cassia, and for green herbs, fennel and dill to mention a few.

I shall be very careful with testing these and as you have said, so should anyone else trying it - I'm used to having to carefully self-monitor and observe side effects of any and all meds I take at all times as a couple especially can suddenly and with little warning develop unpleasant side effects, so I shall initially treat these in the same way

I'm not intending to make these infusions available to others for this reason and I'm aiming to make them for use as additives to mixes rather than to be used as a sole flavouring.

Thanks LilyRed, it's really interesting stuff what you are doing, just thought I had better lob what I said in there, The last thing I want to be is a doommonger. :(
He did seem to think whatever it is is should be easily fixed though, so that's a positive . It may be as you say related to courramins or other specific flavour compounds ( I'm sure cinnamon was one too, but not as bad as some tobacco leaves extract.) Or possibly something to do with the process of extraction?
I wonder whether he's actually started the research on this bit yet. D'ya know??

Gonloopy, I didn't think you were being a doom-monger :)

I'm waiting for Dr F to release his results as we all are, I'm afraid :( Until then it is all a complete unknown really and he may find an easy fix which the flavour companies can use or....??

As regards to Cinnamon, this has several active flavouring ingredients in, but the question is whether the flavour manufacturers actually use cinnamon itself, or a nature-identical version, or whether they use cassia, which has almost the same taste (the Chinese tend to use it instead of cinnamon and it's in many common spice blends, like 5-spice), but contains far higher levels of coumarins. Cassia is safe for human consumption as far as we know as it's been used as a spice for many centuries with no ill effects, but direct inhalation may well be a different kettle of fish - it's one of the reasons I decided not to steep it.

TPA's website has some really useful info on flavouring and flavouring safety, she keeps very up-to-date with safety issues and has been careful to ensure her ingredients used by vapers are diacetyl free, plus she has developed acetoin (I think that's the spelling!) & acetyl propionate free vanilla cream flavours (TPA Vanilla Swirl flavour) to replace custard flavours containing these for vapers and other interested parties, as there is some concern over these flavour additives (Oh dear I hope some of that made sense! :D )

It does make sense! - thank you! And yes we can't know until the results come in.
I think you probably have a far better understanding of the chemistry behind this than me. However, the bit I found fascinating was that some natural tobacco leaf juice gave a cause for further research, and yet from the same vendor others were in normal limits?
Who knows , guess its a case of wait and see. :(

useful info re TPA though I'll whizz off now and take a look...

thank you some very good info here
didn't know the issue with vanilla will have a bit of a look at the tpa website and cupcake world

I knew there was one that was dodgy in essential oils - and I think it is cinnamon. I'd certainly steer clear of anything that's advised against for consumption or use on the skin in other applications. I have The Fragrant Pharmacy, something of a must-have bible for all things relating to essential oils, so I'll check that for the known risky herbs/spices

Hey there ... Your nice little post here interest me a lot ... Would you be able to elaborate on this coffee extraction process ... Like how much coffee and pg did you use .. And for how long did you leave it to simmer ... Please, if you don't mind sharing.... Thanks

No problem, I shared it in another thread and I'd love to hear how anyone who tries it likes it. :)

I put 25ml of carrier (I use PG) in a glass jar/bottle, add 2heaping tbsp of coffee grounds. Bring a small pot of water to boil, then lower it to a simmer. Place the coffee bottle in the simmering water for 20 minutes. Remove and then strain. I used a paper coffee filter and made it into a cone shape, then I put it on a jam jar with the cone shape hanging into it. Then I put a rubber band around the mouth of the jar to hold it there, then I dumped the coffee mixture in and let it drain for an hour (you could leave it overnight, or even strain it again, I don't have patience lol). I was left with a little over 5ml of delicious (not bitter or fake tasting at all) coffee flavoring.
Enjoy!

That was so nice of you ... Really appreciate ...

It is a quite simple process and not time consuming at all... Will give this a try for sure this week... Hmmm what about coffee make you use .. Will try with what I have n see how that turns out...

I ordered coffee concentrate once from a website ... When I got it ... It was a clove flavour in a coffee labeled bottle ... Never did have a chance yet to vape some coffee .... I think now its the time.. :)
Thanks a million
