Oh, smeg, aye!
Cheers @Jugg1es forgot to say that too.
Occasionally rub a 2B pencil on the threads to make life better. My crappy Steel Nemi clone was terrible for iffy threads so it got scribbled on regularly which helped.
@andky I've got dual 0.4mm NiChrome cored Claptons in an old Mephisto, give that a bash and enjoy that too! Next to no ramp up on the mech.
Or try @wraith go to build from last night of a single parallel staged clapton - 0.4mm Clapton paralleled with 0.32mm.
Dual staged claptons. But yes, best results I've had are with 28awg kanthal claptoned with 34awg Nichrome and wrapped in parallel with some plain 28awg kanthal. I do one wrap less of the plain so that the coil is symmetrical and so there is less length in the plain wire so it heats up even quicker and compensates for the longer ramp-up time of the claptoned wire.
A bit blurry but you can see how the plain wire kicks in well before the claptoned wire.
That's on a parallel 18650 box mod so upped to 26awg and less wraps as it can take the lower resistance.
They are a bit of a faff to make, install and tweak but well worth it when it goes well.
I treat them as quad coils when working out what I need in steam engine. I find the slightly increaded resistance of the claptons roughly cancels out the effect of the shorter plain wire. (Though I always test the build on an ohm-meter before, doing and after building and wicking and only dry-fire on a regulated mod while tweaking them).
